Unity Catalog and Data Governance Engineer
Job Summary
The Unity Catalog and Data Governance Engineer makes the lakehouse safe to open up. This role designs and operates the governance layer covering catalog structure, access model, lineage, classification, and audit, so that more people can use more data without the organization losing control of it. The role pairs hands on Unity Catalog implementation with practical governance policy work.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement the Unity Catalog metastore, catalog, schema, and object hierarchy
Build the access model using groups, service principals, and privilege inheritance, and automate grant management
Implement row filters, column masks, and attribute based access controls for sensitive data
Configure and operate data classification, tagging, and sensitive data discovery
Stand up lineage capture and make it usable for impact analysis and audit response
Migrate legacy Hive metastore assets and table ACLs into Unity Catalog
Define and enforce policy for external locations, storage credentials, and Delta Sharing
Produce evidence and reporting for internal audit and regulatory requests
Required Skills
5+ years in data governance, data engineering, or data security roles
Hands on Unity Catalog implementation experience including metastore setup and privilege design
Strong SQL and working Python for automation of governance tasks
Understanding of identity management, group based entitlement, and least privilege design
Experience with data classification and handling of PII, PHI, or PCI data
Ability to translate regulatory language into enforceable technical controls
Preferred Skills
Experience with Collibra, Alation, Purview, or an equivalent catalog alongside Unity Catalog
Delta Sharing and clean room implementation experience
Knowledge of GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, SOX, or GxP requirements as they apply to data platforms
Terraform automation of Unity Catalog objects
