Data Engineer

In this role, you’ll help build and support a modern data platform in Microsoft SQL Server, transforming raw and messy data into high-performance, conformed star schemas that drive business intelligence and reporting. Location: Minneapolis, MN

System One is seeking a Data Engineer (3+ years) to join a growing team in Minneapolis, MN. In this role, you’ll help build and support a modern data platform in Microsoft SQL Server, transforming raw and messy data into high-performance, conformed star schemas that drive business intelligence and reporting

Responsibilities:

• Build multi-layer data pipelines moving data through:
  • Raw layer: ingest structured/semi-structured data from multiple sources
  • Delta layer: cleanse, deduplicate, and standardize data
  • Conformed layer: apply consistent business logic to create enterprise “sources of truth”
  • Gold layer (Star Schema): create optimized Fact and Dimension tables for reporting
• Implement historical tracking using SCD Type 2 patterns (EffectiveDate, EndDate, IsCurrent, etc.)
• Optimize performance (T-SQL tuning, indexing strategies, partitioning approaches) as data volume grows
• Support data governance and lineage standards (sentinel “-1” records, audit columns like InsertDate/UpdateDate)

Required qualifications

• 2–4 years of experience in a Data Engineering / BI Developer type role
• Strong MS SQL Server / T-SQL skills (CTEs, window functions, MERGE statements, etc.)
• Working knowledge of Kimball dimensional modeling (Star Schemas) and medallion-style layered data architecture
• Hands-on experience building SCD Type 2 dimensions
• Experience with SSIS and/or Azure Data Factory (ADF) (or similar ETL/orchestration tools)

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with hybrid sources (flat files, APIs, SQL databases)
• Familiarity with Git/version control for database scripts
• Exposure to Azure SQL Database
