Position Overview

The Data Center Controls Technician will be responsible for the installation, programming, startup, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of advanced building automation and power monitoring systems within critical facility environments. This individual will work closely with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and end users to ensure systems operate efficiently and reliably throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, commission, and service building automation and controls systems.
  • Program and troubleshoot networked control systems, controllers, graphical interfaces, and field devices.
  • Support startup activities for critical facility mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Perform system diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on existing installations.
  • Install and terminate low-voltage control wiring and associated field devices.
  • Assemble, wire, and test control panels and related equipment.
  • Conduct point-to-point verification, system validation, and commissioning activities.
  • Perform calibration and optimization of hardware and software components.
  • Review and interpret control sequences, wiring diagrams, network architecture drawings, and electrical schematics.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, customers, and internal stakeholders to ensure successful project execution.
  • Participate in commissioning meetings, status reviews, and project documentation efforts.
  • Maintain accurate service records, startup reports, and commissioning documentation.
  • Independently manage assigned projects while proactively communicating progress, risks, and solutions.
  • Deliver responsive customer support, troubleshooting assistance, and technical expertise.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience supporting Building Management Systems (BMS/BAS) within data centers, critical infrastructure, industrial facilities, or similar environments.
  • Hands-on Tridium Niagara experience is required.
  • Strong background commissioning, programming, and troubleshooting building automation systems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, HVAC controls, power monitoring systems, and electrical infrastructure.
  • Ability to read and interpret:
    • Control schematics
    • Device wiring diagrams
    • One-line electrical drawings
    • Network topology diagrams
  • Experience with industry-standard communication protocols, including:
    • BACnet IP
    • BACnet MSTP
    • Modbus TCP
    • Modbus RTU
  • Understanding of low-voltage controls and communications wiring, including RS-232, RS-485, CAT5, and CAT6 systems.
  • Familiarity with electrical systems operating at 120V, 240V, and 480V.
  • Ability to utilize construction drawings, specifications, and commissioning documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and related project documentation tools.

Preferred Experience

  • Data center commissioning experience.
  • Power monitoring or critical facility controls experience.
  • Exposure to industrial automation, energy management systems, or facility operations technology.
  • Experience supporting hyperscale, colocation, healthcare, manufacturing, or mission-critical environments.
  • Background coordinating field installation teams and subcontractors.

Work Environment

  • Primarily field-based role supporting active construction projects and operational critical facilities.
  • Regular collaboration with project teams, contractors, commissioning agents, and customers.

Travel Requirements

  • Approximately 40-50% travel based on project assignments.
  • Travel throughout regional project locations as needed.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work safely in construction and industrial environments.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and access mechanical/electrical spaces.
  • Comfortable working around mechanical equipment, piping systems, and energized electrical infrastructure.
  • Ability to perform commissioning and troubleshooting activities for extended periods on project sites.
