Location: Birmingham, AL 35243
Duration: 09/21/2026 –09/21/2027
Pay Rate: $38.57/hour

Job Description

The Data Analytics Analyst I will support the Operations Data Analytics Department and generation project teams by managing, analyzing, validating, and standardizing technical asset data. The role will focus on onboarding new generation assets and updating existing fleet assets in the Maximo work management system.

The analyst will work with solar, battery storage (BESS), gas, hydro modernization, retrofit, and environmental projects. The position requires collaboration with project managers, plant representatives, engineers, and subject matter experts to ensure equipment data, hierarchies, maintenance strategies, inventory information, preventative maintenance activities, and job plans are accurate and standardized.
 

Key Responsibilities
  • Support new and existing generation projects with equipment hierarchy development and updates.
  • Create and review preventative maintenance activities and job plans.
  • Manage and validate equipment and inventory-related data.
  • Provide guidance on the Southern Company D-11 Equipment Identification and Description Standard.
  • Identify appropriate equipment systems and subsystems and ensure consistent classification.
  • Perform daily analysis of technical data from multiple sources.
  • Promote data standardization, quality, and consistency across the generation fleet.
  • Work with plant representatives and project teams to develop maintenance strategies.
  • Validate data with subject matter experts and resolve data-quality issues.
  • Support like-unit comparisons and identify best practices and lessons learned.
  • Provide field support and participate in generating-plant equipment walkdowns.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize issues based on urgency.
  • Travel to generation facilities, potentially up to 50% of the time, including overnight travel.
     

Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

 

Required / Desired Skills
  • 1–3 years of data analytics experience preferred.
  • Strong proficiency with SQL, Python, and/or R.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Matplotlib, or Seaborn.
  • Experience with data management, data integration, ETL, and working with multiple data sources.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and hypothesis testing.
  • Exposure to machine learning/predictive analytics is a plus.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency is required.
  • Experience with IBM Maximo is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Microsoft Reporting Services or similar reporting platforms is a plus.
  • Strong data validation, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • High attention to detail and a questioning mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% and perform generating-plant walkdowns.
  • Ability to work safely with required PPE.
