Overview:

Thompson Facilities Services is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Custodian who will support the cleanliness, sanitation, and overall appearance of campus facilities at Benedict College. The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors through daily custodial services and facility support.

Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  •  Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, residence halls, dining areas, common spaces, and other campus facilities
  • Perform routine custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, trash removal, and disinfecting surfaces
  • Replenish restroom and facility supplies including soap, paper towels, tissue, and sanitizing products
  • Maintain entrances, hallways, stairwells, elevators, and exterior walkways to ensure cleanliness and safety
  • Respond promptly to spills, emergency cleanups, and service requests
  • Assist with room setups and breakdowns for meetings, campus events, and special functions
  • Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, floor machines, carpet extractors, and cleaning carts safely and effectively
  • Follow all safety procedures, chemical handling guidelines, and OSHA regulations
  • Report maintenance issues, damaged equipment, or safety hazards to supervisors promptly
  • Maintain custodial closets, equipment, and storage areas in a clean and organized condition
  • Support additional facility and custodial operations as assigned by management

Work Environment

  • Active college campus environment at Benedict College
  • Fast-paced setting with frequent interaction with students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise from equipment, and varying temperatures
  • May require evening, weekend, holiday, or special event coverage based on campus operational needs
  • Work may involve multiple campus buildings, stairways, and both indoor and outdoor responsibilities
  • This is an essential position which may require work during inclement weather.
Qualifications:
  • 1- year previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or facilities maintenance experience preferred
  • Experience working in educational, healthcare, hospitality, or commercial environments is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality required
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Efficiently manage time to complete tasks within designated schedules.
  • Basic communication abilities to understand instructions and work effectively within a team or with supervisors.
  • Familiarity with various cleaning methods, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Understanding and implementing safety guidelines when handling cleaning agents and operating equipment to prevent accidents.

Physical Requirements

    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday
    • Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
    • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb stairs, and reach overhead regularly
    • Ability to perform repetitive cleaning motions including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming
    • Ability to safely operate custodial and floor care equipment
    • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions as needed
    • Ability to safely handle cleaning chemicals and supplies in accordance with safety guidelines
    • Sufficient manual dexterity and coordination to use cleaning tools and equipment effectively
    • Visual and auditory ability to identify hazards, spills, or maintenance
