    Position Summary

    The Custodial and Maintenance Building Lead assists the Director of Operations in ensuring District facilities are clean, safe, secure, and well-maintained. The position provides day-to-day leadership and coordination of custodial and maintenance operations while supporting district initiatives, preventative maintenance, emergency response, and compliance with applicable regulations and collective bargaining agreements.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assist the Director of Operations in coordinating daily custodial and maintenance operations.
    • Inspect district buildings and grounds to ensure cleanliness, safety, security, and quality standards are maintained.
    • Identify maintenance and repair needs and assist in developing preventative maintenance schedules.
    • Coordinate and monitor work performed by outside contractors and verify completion of contracted services.
    • Prepare reports related to projects, labor, materials, and maintenance activities as requested.
    • Assist with key control, security hardware maintenance, and key duplication.
    • Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, equipment, and consumable materials.
    • Assist with procurement of materials, equipment, and contracted services.
    • Support compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations.
    • Respond to emergency maintenance issues, including after-hours emergencies and snow removal as needed.
    • Cross-train in custodial, maintenance, and operations functions to support department needs.
    • Perform skilled custodial and maintenance duties as needed during employee absences, vacancies, or emergencies.
    • Assist with orientation and training of custodial, maintenance, and technician staff.
    • Provide work direction and operational support to custodial and maintenance staff as assigned.
    • Work collaboratively with district administrators, supervisors, and school personnel.
    • Maintain confidentiality regarding personnel, facilities, and district operations.
    • Maintain knowledge of current maintenance practices, building systems, and industry standards.
    • Follow Board policies, administrative procedures, safety regulations, and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school or college coursework preferred.
    • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible custodial and/or maintenance experience.
    • Experience with HVAC systems, building maintenance, and preventative maintenance preferred.
    • Experience coordinating maintenance projects and building operations.
    • Knowledge of custodial practices, building systems, safety regulations, and maintenance procedures.
    • Valid Illinois Driver's License.
    • Ability to obtain and/or maintain Certified Plant Maintenance Manager (AFE) certification, if required by the District.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and respond to emergencies.
    • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and inventory/work order systems.
    • Ability to interpret technical manuals, safety regulations, and maintenance documentation.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, contractors, and administrators.

    Physical Requirements

    • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds; occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance.
    • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, bend, kneel, crouch, and work in varying weather conditions.
    • Ability to respond to emergency situations outside of normal working hours.
