    SUMMARY

    The Culinary Arts Assistant performs a variety of tasks to support the Culinary Arts Program and staff to include helping train the students in the front of the house area, distributing, collecting, and filing proper documentation from students, and coordinating, setting up, and breaking down special events.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Provides instruction and training to students related to café operations, food service, cashiering, hosting, expediting food, and general customer service skills. Carries out the instructional plan as directed by the teacher and/or head chef.
    • Maintains individual student folders and student records and disseminates instructional materials to students as directed by the instructor; types report cards, disciplinary referrals, accident reports, and parent correspondence.
    • Assists in preparing instructional materials by the teacher and/or head chef.
    • Supervises students during catering events. Schedules student help for evening and weekend work on or off campus.
    • Assists in preparing for catering. Assists in the set-up and tear-down of the Coffee Shop, Fine Dining Room, Banquet Room and other assigned areas under the supervision of the teacher and/or head chef
    • Maintains sanitation, health and safety standards in work area.
    • Assists in maintaining stock levels orders supplies as needed.
    • Assists students in job search activities; provides industry referrals and assists with preparation of resume.
    • Assists in operating cash register; receives money and makes correct change as required.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • High School diploma or GED equivalent; AND one year of clerical and restaurant industry experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
    • Must possess a valid Maricopa County Food Handler's card.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

    • Ability to provide effective instruction and direction to culinary arts students.
    • Skill in delegating front on house tasks to students.
    • Skill in accurately operating a cash register and point of sale system.
    • Skill in operating a variety of commercial kitchen appliances.
    • Ability to maintain compliance with food safety regulations and standards.
    • Possess a basic working knowledge of the culinary industry, including food service operations, sanitation standards, food preparation and food service equipment.
    • Skill in planning, prioritizing, and completing assignments with minimum supervision.
    • Skill in understanding, explaining, and applying relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
    • Ability to maintain accurate files and records.
    • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to provide excellent customer experiences, including but not limited to interacting tactfully and courteously with the public.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    • Work is performed in food service and preparation areas and requires exposure to hot and cold temperatures and potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals.
    • May be required to lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
