Unlike a typical retail clerk, this role requires technical knowledge to help contractors and DIYers select the right species, grades, and quantities of wood for specific structural or aesthetic projects. ResponsibilitiesOrder Specification: Consulting with customers to determine their project needs (e.g., pressure-treated for decks vs. kiln-dried for framing) and suggesting the correct fasteners, hardware, and accessories.POS Management: Processing sales, quotes, and "will-call" tickets using industry-specific software (like Spruce, Epicor, or BizTrack).Technical Sales: Calculating "board footage" and providing accurate pricing based on current lumber commodity markets.Yard Coordination: Communicating via radio or computer with yard staff to ensure orders are pulled correctly and loaded safely into customer vehicles.Merchandising: Keeping the retail showroom stocked, labeled, and clean-specifically managing high-turnover items like tape measures, saw blades, and structural screws.Lead Generation: Identifying high-volume contractors and passing their information to the Outside Sales team for long-term account management. QualificationsLumber Literacy: A solid grasp of wood species (Cedar, Fir, Pine), grades and dimensions (nominal vs. actual).Mathematical Accuracy: Ability to quickly calculate square footage, linear footage, and waste factors for customer estimates.Customer Service: A thick skin and a helpful attitude; the ability to handle the "morning rush" of busy contractors who need to get back to the job site.Product Knowledge: Familiarity with related building materials like composite decking (Trex/Azek), siding, and insulation.Multitasking: Handling phone inquiries while simultaneously managing a line of in-person customers. EducationExperience: 1–3 years in retail sales or construction.
