GUIDANCE COUNSELOR
QUALIFICATIONS -
Master's Degree, Counselor's Certificate - valid in West Virginia and three
years successful teaching experience
SUPERVISORS -
Principal to whom assigned and Director of Curriculum and Instruction
RESPONSIBILITIES -
The role of the counselor, in responding to the unique needs of the
individual student, is to interact effectively with personnel in the educational
setting to contribute to an educational environment which is conducive to
learning and which provides opportunities, strengthens areas of weakness and
extends positive values to each facet of life. The school counselor, in
implementing a guidance and counseling program within district policy and
guidelines.
The Guidance Counselor -
- plans and implements a guidance program in cooperation with
other teachers;
- fosters a climate conducive to learning;
- utilizes a variety of guidance techniques and counseling strategies
to accommodate the learning styles of assigned students;
- maintains and upgrades his/her professional skills;
- interacts with students and parents to promote a positive school
image to enhance the teaching-learning process;
- maintains professional work habits;
- performs other duties and functions as assigned by the principal;
- provides purpose and direction for schools/county;

Responsibilities- (Continued)
- demonstrates cognitive skills to gather, analyze and synthesize
information to reach goals;
- manages consensus and group behaviors;
- enhances quality of total school/county organization;
- organizes and delegates to accomplish goals;
- communicates effectively.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS -
The Guidance Counselor -
- assists in the diagnosis and assessment of student learning needs;
- develops and maintains effective relationships with individuals and
groups of students to provide assistance in areas of education,
occupation and personal needs;
- plans with faculty and administration to determine specific
approaches to meeting student needs;
- interacts with parents and other members of the community to
promote understanding of the school's role in meeting student
needs;
- promotes positive community relations through effective
communication and involvement of community members;
- analyzes personal characteristics and strengthens areas of behavior
as necessary for the fulfillment of the assignment;
- performs other duties and functions as assigned by the
Superintendent.

EVALUATION -
Continuing contract counselors will be evaluated at least annually.
Counselors holding a probationary contract will be evaluated twice annually. This
evaluation will be performed by the school principal and by the Director of
Curriculum and Instruction. It will consist of an assessment of the degree to
which the school counselor has accomplished the stated goals and objectives
developed for the position.
