Counselor

Provide individual, group, and couples psychotherapy to students in harmony with gospel principles.

Position Summary

The Counselor provides psychotherapy services to BYU-Idaho students and supports the mission of the Counseling Center through clinical care, professional collaboration, and outreach. This position works with students in individual, group, and couples settings, maintains accurate clinical documentation, participates in center meetings and consultations, and contributes to outreach efforts that support student needs and campus well-being.

The Counselor is expected to practice within a short-term therapy model, use sound clinical judgment, and follow the ethical standards of the profession, the licensing board, and the Counseling Center.

What You’ll Do

• Provide individual, group, and couples psychotherapy to students

• Maintain a clinical caseload of approximately 26 sessions per week

• Document each session accurately, including diagnosis and attendance in the electronic scheduling system

• Maintain clinical records for all sessions

• Continue professional growth through training, continuing education, and current best practices

• Share relevant training and learning with coworkers as needed

• Participate actively in center meetings, in-services, and case consultations

• Support the goals and mission of the Counseling Center through collaboration and contribution

• Accept outreach assignments and present to student groups and campus partners as needed

• Use the Learning by Faith model in outreach efforts and assess outreach outcomes

Qualifications, Skills & Attributes

Education

• Minimum of a master’s degree in the mental health field

• Post-graduate experience is highly preferred

Skills & Attributes

• Individual, group, and couples psychotherapy skills

• Experience working with a wide range of diagnoses

• Experience in mental health outreach

• Sound clinical judgment

• Ability to follow ethical guidelines of the profession, licensing board, and Counseling Center

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to contribute effectively in team meetings, consultations, and collaborative settings

• Commitment to a short-term therapy model

Certifications

• Eligible for state of Idaho licensure in social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, or counseling

State Regulations

• Must be licensed or eligible for licensing in the state of Idaho as a psychologist, social worker, marriage and family therapist, or counselor and comply with state laws governing the licensing board

Work Schedule

Regular Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Weekend / Holiday / On Call:
Shares in the provision of the crisis/on-call service for the university for after-hours and weekend mental health crises
