Working Hours and/or Working Conditions
HOURS: Maximum of 25 hours per week. Work hours/days will be within office hours of the department. WORKING CONDITIONS: Travel between campuses and off-campus locations may be required for campus liaison and professional meeting activities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to interpret medical, psychological, and educational documentation to determine accommodations. Experience supporting individuals with disabilities and multilingual learners (preferred). Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Proficiency in technology and student information systems. Knowledge of shared governance, community college mission, and accessibility best practices.
Supervision
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to Director of Student Access Services and Support Programs but may take direction from other divisional administrations as directed. May receive direction and/or training from full-time student access services counselors as assigned. SUPERVISION GIVEN: N/A
Job Function
The Student Access Services Counselor provides holistic counseling and advising services that support students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and students developing writing skills in achieving academic, career, and personal goals. As part of the Counseling and Academic Advising Department, this role supports exploratory and declared students by removing barriers to success, promoting well-being, identifying reasonable accommodations, fostering persistence, progress, and completion.
Job Responsibilities
Student Success & Coordinated Care
- Serve as part of the Student Success Team using an outreach approach of coordinated care to support special population students.
- Provide counseling and advising services to students building their writing skills, students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and other identified populations.
- Provide first semester course planning for new students, helping them with course suggestions based on academic preparation, assessment results, and program pathways.
- Assess, approve, monitor, and renew academic accommodations.
- Utilize a caseload approach within a student success team including but not limited to monitoring, proactive outreach, referring and maintaining timely and accurate documentation of student interactions, communications, and progress to support continuous improvement and compliance.
- In alignment with the Standard of Care operations, deliver proactive services via in-person, virtual, phone, walk-in, group, and online modalities in response to student needs, enrollment trends, and changing campus environments.
Academic & Holistic Support
- Provide proactive, holistic student support through counseling referrals, academic alert interventions, and connections to campus and community resources.
- Provide personalized support using data-informed practices to proactively monitor, track and support and assist students in succeeding in their academic pursuits and/or transfer goals.
- Assist students in exploring academic programs, career pathways, interests, and strengths.
- Support students on academic or financial aid probation and those requiring specialized academic monitoring.
- Provide short-term, solution-focused counseling to Macomb students experiencing personal, academic, or social concerns.
- Develop and implement strategies to support students' well-being and resilience, emphasizing a holistic approach to student success.
- Interpret and communicate college policies, procedures, and students' rights and responsibilities.
- Conducting unofficial degree audits.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Model ethical, professional counseling practices and collaboration across departments and divisions.
- Participate and serve as a representative for counseling and academic advising at outreach events and activities, such as new student orientations, as needed.
- Participate actively in individual and team professional development opportunities to enhance skills, remain current with best practices, and support continuous improvement in advising and counseling services.
Other Duties
- Perform additional responsibilities in alignment with the Student Services Unit, the departmental goals.
Education
A master's degree in counseling or social work and State of Michigan LPC or LLPC required.
Qualifications
Experience in higher education, counseling or advising preferred.
PRELIMINARY QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current and comprehensive knowledge of the discipline providing a foundation for effective counseling of special populations of students.
- Licensing or Certification: State of Michigan LPC or LLPC required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experiential Background: Recent professional experience in working with individuals with disabilities and individuals who speak English as their second language preferred.
