CERTIFIED DENTAL ASSISTANT

2 Positions Available

USP Lewisburg, Lewisburg, PA |  Full-Time  |  Up to 40 hours/week, Monday–Friday

 

Position Overview

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is seeking two (2) Certified Dental Assistants to provide in-house chair-side dental support at USP Lewisburg's Health Services Department. This is a non-personal services role delivering direct clinical support to a correctional dental clinic across a full range of oral surgery, operative, prosthetic, radiology, endodontic, and preventive procedures. Candidates will work alongside the institution's Dental Officer(s) in a structured, session-based schedule within a secure federal correctional facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide chair-side dental assistance across operative, prosthetic, endodontic, periodontic, radiology, and oral surgery procedures.
  • Take and develop intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs, including bitewings, periapical, and panorex films.
  • Prepare anesthetics, instruments, and sterile fields; assist with four-handed dentistry techniques.
  • Perform sterilization and disinfection of instruments in accordance with clinical infection-control standards.
  • Chart intra-oral findings and maintain oral/dental anatomy documentation to support the Dental Officer.
  • Provide patient instruction on oral hygiene care, fluoride application, and desensitizing agents.
  • Complete clerical duties including filing, scheduling, call-outs, inventory of dental supplies, and vendor coordination.
  • Maintain professional, unsupervised working relationships with an inmate population from diverse backgrounds, consistent with institution security protocols.
  • Remain available for emergency coverage within the scheduled workweek as directed by the Contract Monitor.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited dental assistant school or program.
  • Training in dental radiology and radiology safety, plus a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Radiology Certification.
  • Minimum one (1) year of work experience involving dental radiology.
  • Minimum 18 months of work experience as a Dental Assistant or Dental Hygienist, including six (6) months of current clinical experience within the past year (experience may run concurrently with radiology experience).
  • Current CPR certification (American Red Cross or American Heart Association).
  • Ability to read, understand, fluently speak, and legibly write English; bilingual Spanish and prior correctional experience preferred but not required.
  • Must pass all Bureau of Prisons security requirements, including NCIC, fingerprint, and law enforcement agency background checks, and a pre-employment urinalysis screening.

Compensation

$28.11 an hour
