Overview

Summary / Objective

The Group Leader supports Conveyance team members by providing a positive work environment while ensuring efficient material flow throughout the plant. This role combines people leadership, analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, flow analysis tools, and industry experience to evaluate material delivery to the line side in a JIT/Kanban sequencing process.

The Group Leader will assist the department manager in designing practical routes that support 30-minute delivery frequencies. This position is responsible for helping ensure material delivery solutions are properly prepared, executed, and installed to prevent production downtime caused by material shortages.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure the safety of yourself and others by following all safety policies and procedures and wearing required PPE.
  • Lead and direct hourly employees to promote two-way communication, skill development, issue resolution, and efficient performance.
  • Manage team member time and attendance and provide coaching as necessary to improve attendance and reduce turnover.
  • Provide training and development to Conveyance team members, including safe tugger and lift operations.
  • Support production by evaluating customer needs and reviewing current processes and material flow.
  • Conduct surveys and gather data, including process time studies, physical space measurements, equipment identification, and documentation.
  • Utilize industry experience to design material handling and delivery systems, specify equipment, and develop space design layouts.
  • Evaluate automated delivery solutions to improve material flow efficiency.
  • Generate and support A3 and Kaizen activities focused on improvements within the Conveyance department.
  • Assist with project management related to cart and tugger design.
  • Work closely with automation vendors to verify that proposed solutions meet specifications and cost-saving objectives.
  • Create and design material flow systems that support mixed-load designs using Kanban.
  • Ensure systems meet applicable company and engineering standards, policies, and requirements.
  • Prepare department KPIs and monitor department performance against budget.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Work rotating shifts and overtime as needed.
  • Remain flexible and assist in other areas and duties as needed to support departmental goals and objectives.

Required Qualifications, Education & Experience

  • Previous supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to safely operate Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and common software applications.

Preferred Qualifications, Education & Experience

  • Working knowledge of plant logistics, inventory control, and material flow processes.
  • 2-3 years of production experience.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in an automotive industrial plant environment.
  • Frequent movement throughout the facility with exposure to high noise levels and equipment commonly used in stamping, welding, and E-coat environments.
  • Strong focus on workplace safety is required.

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking on the plant floor.
  • Ability to regularly step on and off PIT equipment.
  • Ability to traverse the entire facility.
  • Ability to lift up to 33 pounds at times.

Additional Information

  • This department operates on the receiving side of the facility and is responsible for receiving parts and delivering them to the production line.
  • The position requires rotating shifts.
  • The position is eligible for overtime.
  • Strong safety awareness and leadership skills are essential.
  • Plex is the ERP software platform used by the facility, specifically the Plex Smart Manufacturing Platform, now owned by Rockwell Automation.
  • The company does not hire immediate family members of current employees.
