Controls Technician

Airport Electrical & Automation Maintenance
Location: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Phoenix, AZ 85034
Pay Rate: $40.71 per hour
Employment Type: Contract, with potential for direct hire based on performance and business needs
Contract Length: Three to six months
Openings: Three
Schedule: 42 hours per week
Work Arrangement: Fully onsite
Interview Process: 30-minute onsite interview

Schedule
Candidates must be available for either of the following schedules:
  • Sunday through Wednesday
  • Wednesday through Saturday
  • Three 12-hour shifts and one six-hour shift each week
  • Wednesday is always the six-hour shift
Flexibility to work assigned hours and schedules is required. The position also requires availability for on-call support, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.

About the Opportunity
Our client is seeking Controls Technicians to maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair electrical and automated control systems supporting operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

This hands-on role involves PLCs, HMIs, variable frequency drives, motor controls, sensors, and industrial communication networks. Technicians will respond to equipment faults, perform preventive maintenance, and help minimize downtime across automated airport equipment and related systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and operate electrical and automated control systems.
  • Diagnose faults involving PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, relays, contactors, motor controls, and communication devices.
  • Monitor equipment status, alarms, and performance trends to identify problems and potential failures.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, cleaning, calibration, testing, and repairs.
  • Make approved adjustments to control parameters and equipment settings.
  • Verify proper system operation following repairs, maintenance, or adjustments.
  • Support automated airport equipment, baggage handling, and related control systems.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inventory records, and equipment data.
  • Communicate troubleshooting findings, equipment conditions, and completed repairs.
  • Coordinate with maintenance, operations, engineering, customers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Provide on-call service and support for existing installations.
  • Follow required safety procedures and maintain clean equipment and work areas.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate company vehicles daily.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required airport security clearance.
  • Knowledge of electrical and automated control systems.
  • Skills in PLC programming and electrical design.
  • Skills in Human-Machine Interface (HMI) design and programming.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical, PLC, HMI, and related control systems.
  • Ability to interface with real-time database applications used to manage critical production information.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to use laptops, multimeters, hand tools, and electrical diagnostic equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving, verbal communication, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with team members, customers, contractors, consultants, and vendors.
  • Availability for assigned shifts and on-call work, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least two years of experience maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, or installing industrial electrical, automation, or control systems.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, Industrial Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Experience with PLC-controlled equipment and industrial automation.
  • Experience troubleshooting VFDs, motor controls, sensors, relays, contactors, and communication networks.
  • Experience with conveyors, baggage handling, automated material handling, or similar industrial systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication networks and control system architecture.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience using calibration equipment and other diagnostic tools.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
This position includes work outdoors on an active airport ramp and within mechanical, electrical, and baggage conveyor equipment areas.
Candidates must be able to:
  • Regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, sit, reach, bend, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • Climb ladders and work in confined or restricted spaces.
  • Work around aircraft, vehicles, conveyors, heavy equipment, and electrical systems.
  • Work in changing weather conditions, varying temperatures, and loud environments.
  • Meet the vision and hand-eye coordination requirements needed to inspect and repair equipment safely.
