Controls Technician – Airport Automation

This opportunity is ideal for a journeyman electrician or industrial controls technician with experience in manufacturing, distribution centers, fulfillment centers, bottling plants, or automated material handling. You’ll diagnose equipment faults, troubleshoot PLCs and motor controls, and help keep airport equipment operating safely and reliably.

Controls Technician – Airport Automation
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) | Phoenix, AZ | $40.71/hour

• Work arrangement: Fully onsite
• Assignment: 3–6 month contract with potential for permanent hire based on performance and business needs
• Schedule: Sunday–Wednesday or Wednesday–Saturday, totaling 42 hours per week. Three 12-hour shifts and one 6-hour Wednesday shift. Must be available for all assigned shifts.

We’re hiring Controls Technicians to maintain and troubleshoot electrical and automated equipment at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. This opportunity is ideal for a journeyman electrician or industrial controls technician with experience in manufacturing, distribution centers, fulfillment centers, bottling plants, or automated material handling.
You’ll diagnose equipment faults, troubleshoot PLCs and motor controls, and help keep airport equipment operating safely and reliably.
What you’ll do

• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and automated control systems.
• Diagnose problems involving PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, relays, contactors, and motor controls.
• Read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
• Troubleshoot industrial communication networks and connected control devices.
• Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, calibration, and equipment testing.
• Make approved adjustments to equipment settings and control parameters.
• Respond to equipment faults and verify proper operation after repairs.
• Support automated airport equipment, conveyors, and related control systems.
• Document repairs, maintenance activities, equipment conditions, and parts usage.
• Coordinate with maintenance, operations, engineering, vendors, and contractors.
• Follow electrical safety procedures and airport operating requirements.

What you’ll bring

• Industrial electrical and controls troubleshooting skills.
• Experience with PLC programming, electrical design, and HMI design or programming.
• Ability to troubleshoot electrical, PLC, and HMI systems.
• Familiarity with real-time database applications supporting production information.
• Ability to read electrical schematics and technical documentation.
• Proficiency using laptops, multimeters, hand tools, and electrical diagnostic equipment.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to operate company vehicles daily.
• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain airport security clearance.
• Availability for assigned shifts and on-call support, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred experience

• Two or more years maintaining, repairing, installing, or troubleshooting industrial electrical or automation systems.
• Allen-Bradley or Siemens PLCs.
• VFDs, HMI systems, industrial Ethernet, TCP/IP, and equipment configuration or firmware.
• Automated conveyors, motor-driven roller systems, SEW drives, baggage handling, or material handling equipment.
• Technical degree in electrical technology, automation, mechatronics, or a related field.
• Microsoft Word and Excel.

Work environment
This active role includes outdoor work on airport ramps and work around conveyors, electrical equipment, aircraft, and moving vehicles. Candidates must be comfortable climbing ladders, working in restricted spaces, and regularly lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
