    Description

The Controls Integration Engineer defines how automated material handling systems operate and owns the site-specific setup of the controls application software that runs them, assembling and configuring standard code for each site"s conveyors, sorters, and automated work cells. For an assigned project, the engineer leads technical execution end to end: authoring the functional specifications, defining test criteria, and delivering tested, reviewed code and documentation ready for field deployment. The engineer solves difficult technical problems with visible risks or roadblocks, bringing clarity to implementations where the business problem is understood but the solution is not fully designed. The engineer mentors the engineers on the project, reviews every deliverable for quality and downstream readiness, and builds close partnerships with third-party vendors and cross-functional teams. The engineer is also the primary handoff contact to the field team and carries field lessons learned back to upstream design teams. The goal is to take risk out of every project before it reaches the field and give the field team everything it needs to bring the site up.

    Key job responsibilities

    Application Development and Delivery

Own application deliverables for the assigned project from planning through handoff.

Assemble and configure the site"s controls application software from standard code libraries, adapting it where the project requires.

Partner with design teams to resolve open functional questions and drive decisions to closure.

Contribute to design reviews with partner teams, bringing the controls and system function perspective.

    Testing and Validation

Define test criteria for emulation, digital twin, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) in partnership with simulation, equipment, and design teams.

Lead emulation and digital twin testing, verifying that system flow meets design intent.

Participate in FAT and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) as the system function expert.

Build the site"s commissioning test cases from the standard test case library, in partnership with the field team.

    Cross-Team Partnerships

Build strong partnerships with cross-functional teams and third-party vendors, leading site-level coordination to resolve technical issues and unblock progress.

Define functional requirements for third-party interfaces and drive gaps to resolution with third-party teams.

Communicate status, risks, and decisions clearly to project stakeholders.

Serve as the primary partner to the field team from planning through handoff.

    Site Handoff and Post-Handoff Support

Deliver a complete, documented handoff package for each project.

Train the field team on each subsystem before handoff.

Partner with the field team on root cause analysis and corrective action for issues found in the field.

    Continuous Improvement and Mentorship

Document issues, resolutions, and lessons learned, and feed them back to upstream design teams to improve future projects.

Improve team procedures, templates, and tools based on project experience.

Mentor engineers through hands-on guidance and deliverable review.

    AutoStore-Specific Commissioning Duties:

Commission and validate AutoStore grid infrastructure, robot fleet initialization, port configurations, and charging systems

Troubleshoot robot navigation faults, bin handling errors, and port throughput issues

Analyze system logs, datasets, and diagnostic outputs to identify trends, anomalies, and root cause of system failures

Monitor and optimize system performance using diagnostic tools (PowerBI, Databricks, AutoStore controller software)

Support grid modifications, expansion projects, and firmware/software upgrades

Conduct advanced root cause analysis on system failures and performance deviations

Validate end-to-end material flow from AutoStore grid through conveyance to outbound operations

Collaborate with AutoStore distribution partners, customers, and internal teams to ensure successful deployments and minimal downtime

Interpret system telemetry, performance metrics, and monitoring dashboards to drive continuous improvement

So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
