Position Overview
CBIZ Talent Solutions is assisting our rapidly growing, privately held commercial roofing client on the east side in their search for a Controller.

The Controller will serve as the senior-most accounting leader for this family business, responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations, including general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting. This individual will partner closely with ownership to provide timely, accurate financial insights that support strategic decision-making and continued business growth.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, hands-on, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, project-based environment. This is an in-office role and includes direct supervision of one staff accountant.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls related to revenue, costs, and project expenditures.
  • Lead the monthly and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
  • Prepare and present financial statements and key performance metrics to ownership.
  • Manage the budgeting and forecasting process, including ongoing financial analysis.
  • Prepare and review job costing reports to support accurate tracking of construction project performance.
  • Coordinate accounting and tax-related activities with external advisors.
  • Evaluate and improve accounting systems and processes to drive efficiency and scalability.
  • Develop and enforce company policies, procedures, and workflow controls to safeguard assets.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop office staff.
  • Oversee payroll processing and ensure compliance with all related tax requirements.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to ownership to support strategic decision-making.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support the needs of the business.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Experience in construction, commercial roofing, or job-costing environments strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience with accounting systems and financial software.
  • Proven ability to manage financial analysis, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Strong leadership and team development skills.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to partner directly with ownership.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; experience with Foundation Software is a plus.
