BigFoot Staffing is seeking a Controller on behalf of our client, a privately owned engineering and manufacturing company serving aerospace, defense, and commercial markets. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for someone who understands project accounting, enjoys learning how a business operates, and can turn financial information into practical decisions.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the CFO, you’ll oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, and project cost visibility. You’ll work closely with project managers to understand costs, monitor performance, and maintain accurate reporting throughout each project.
The accounting team includes one Staff Accountant, with outside specialists supporting selected projects. You’ll balance daily execution with improvements to systems and processes, including a planned transition from Epicor to Odoo and opportunities to automate manual finance work.
This environment requires initiative, sound judgment, and comfort moving quickly. Early success will depend on learning the operation, understanding how materials and labor flow through jobs, and building productive relationships across the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Own month-end and year-end close, financial statements, reconciliations, and general ledger accuracy.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, and payroll accounting.
- Supervise and support the Staff Accountant and coordinate outside accounting resources as needed.
- Partner with project managers on job costing, budgets, milestone billing, and revenue recognition.
- Maintain visibility into materials, labor, inventory, and costs across project-specific jobs.
- Maintain and refresh material burden, overhead, and general and administrative rates at six-month intervals.
- Prepare financial reports, forecasts, and variance analyses that support operational decisions.
- Manage tax reporting and compliance activities with appropriate internal and external support.
- Support government contract proposal audits, DCAA audits, and applicable FAR/CAS requirements.
- Maintain internal controls and accounting procedures that support accurate, consistent execution.
- Support cash management and banking relationships.
- Help transition accounting processes from Epicor to Odoo.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual Excel work, improve reporting, and automate routine tasks.
- Contribute to additional financial and strategic projects as business needs evolve.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
- Progressive accounting experience with demonstrated growth into Controller-level responsibility.
- Candidates with approximately four to five years of experience and strong progression into accounting leadership will be considered.
- Manufacturing accounting experience, including job costing, inventory, and production cost flow.
- Strong project accounting skills, including percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
- Understanding of burden rates, overhead allocation, and project profitability.
- Experience owning financial close, reporting, reconciliations, and compliance activities.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience working with an ERP system.
- Ability to work directly with project managers and explain financial information clearly.
- A self-directed, hands-on approach with strong attention to detail.
- Confidence introducing improvements constructively and discussing different approaches.
- Government contract accounting, FAR/CAS, and DCAA audit experience preferred.
- Epicor, Odoo, ERP migration, or finance automation experience helpful.
- U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status, as specified by the client for this position.
Work Environment & Schedule
- Onsite role with close collaboration across finance, project management, and operations.
- Demanding environment that combines daily accounting responsibilities with systems improvements and business growth.
- 9/80 schedule with extended workdays and alternating Fridays scheduled off. Administrative work, catch-up, close deadlines, and other business needs frequently require work on those Fridays, with additional time as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work at a desk and computer for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
- Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform the essential functions.
Compensation & Benefits
