Job Description
We're bringing our controller function fully in-house as our long-time external controller retires. This role owns the complete accounting cycle, payroll, treasury, budgeting, tax compliance, and financial reporting across multiple entities, serving as the company's primary financial partner to ownership and leadership. You'll work closely with our external CPA firm, banks, insurance providers, and vendors to maintain strong financial controls as we grow. This is a true Controller seat — full ownership of the financial function — without needing a CPA license.
What You’ll Do
As a Controller, you will:
Accounting, Billing & Collections
Manage the full accounting cycle for multiple entities in QuickBooks — AP, AR, journal entries, payroll entries, and credit card activity
Prepare and distribute customer invoices per contract terms; review billing for accuracy and ensure jobs are invoiced timely
Monitor receivables and lead collections while maintaining strong client relationships
Maintain vendor files, W-9s, and organized accounting records
Payroll & HR Support
Process payroll accurately and in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including multi-state requirements
Record and reconcile payroll journal entries and benefit deductions each pay period
Coordinate onboarding, background checks, workers' comp classifications, and year-end W-2 preparation
Financial Close, Reporting & Budgeting
Perform monthly bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations; finalize transactions and commission calculations by the 6th of each month
Prepare accurate monthly financial statements for ownership and leadership by the 10th
Review revenue recognition, cash postings, and commission/royalty calculations
Lead the annual operating budget — gathering data, building models, and monitoring performance against budget
Treasury, Tax & Risk Management
Monitor cash flow, manage forecasting/liquidity, and maintain banking relationships and credit facilities
Prepare and file sales and property tax returns, 1099s, and multi-state registrations
Coordinate with our external CPA firm on tax returns, audits, and year-end reporting
Manage insurance renewals, workers' comp/GL audits, and certificates of insurance
Leadership & Collaboration
Serve as the primary financial resource for ownership and department leaders
Develop and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
Identify opportunities to improve processes and support strategic decisions through financial analysis
What You’ll Need
Non-Negotiable:
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities
QuickBooks required; multi-entity experience strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of GAAP, payroll, AP/AR, budgeting, and financial reporting, including multi-state payroll/tax compliance
Proficient in Excel and Microsoft Office
Excellent communication skills — you'll represent FloodGate with banks, insurers, CPAs, and vendors
High integrity, confidentiality, and attention to detail
No CPA required — this is not a credentialed accounting role
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
Multi-entity accounting experience
Recruiting, staffing, or professional services industry experience
