Alliance Resource Group is partnered with a family-owned custom manufacturer with 60+ years of continuous operation, now operating as a holding company with over $60M in revenue and 150+ employees across two Northern California production facilities. The company serves as an engineering and manufacturing partner for major industrial OEMs, producing custom-engineered components for well-known American industrial brands.
The business has been profitable every year since its founding, is cash-flow positive, and continues to grow through both organic expansion and strategic acquisitions. With decades of domestic manufacturing expertise and a customer base that benefits directly from reshoring and supply chain repatriation trends, the company is entering its next growth phase. Leadership is next-generation family ownership with a long-term hold strategy and no plans for exit or sale.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This company is hiring its first dedicated Controller to build and lead the finance function across two operating entities (combined ~$60M in revenue, the smaller of the two acquired several years ago).
This is a build role, not a maintenance role. The business has strong revenue, a loyal base of blue-chip industrial customers, and an existing bookkeeper who manages the monthly close for both entities. What it needs is the financial infrastructure, controls, and reporting that match its current scale. You will establish that foundation: restructuring the chart of accounts, rebuilding the cost accounting model, and implementing a disciplined close process. Once the accounting foundation is solid, you will build out budgeting, forecasting, and the operational reporting that leadership needs to drive capital allocation and growth decisions.
You will work directly with the CEO and senior leadership in an open-office, plant-adjacent setting and spend meaningful time on the production floor. This is an opportunity to shape an entire finance function at a profitable, growing manufacturer that is ready to invest in doing things the right way.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Restructure and standardize the Chart of Accounts across both entities. Take ownership of the general ledger, implement a disciplined month-end close process, and elevate reporting to audit-ready quality.
- Establish internal controls over inventory, cash disbursements, accounts payable, and payroll. Document standard operating procedures that bring consistency and rigor to financial operations at both locations.
- Rebuild the cost accounting model from the ground up. Work closely with plant leadership to validate Bills of Materials, labor routings, and overhead allocations so that reported product costs are accurate and trustworthy.
- Collaborate with operations and planning teams to stand up cycle counting and scrap tracking programs. Own inventory valuation and reconcile ERP data to physical inventory on an ongoing basis.
- Produce gross margin reporting by product and customer that strips away broad allocations and surfaces true unit economics. Give the leadership team clear visibility into where the business is making (and losing) margin.
- Develop dynamic financial models in Excel (including 3-statement models and rolling cash flow forecasts) and stand up the company's first formal budgeting process with monthly variance reporting.
- Define and monitor a core set of operational and financial KPIs, including scrap rates, inventory turns, gross margins, and customer-level profitability, to inform strategic decisions across the business.
- Serve as the primary liaison with the company's external CPA and tax advisors. Coordinate on tax payments, compliance filings, and preparation for any future external audit engagements.
- Supervise the existing accounting and office support staff responsible for transaction processing, close activities, and payroll. Guide the team through new processes with hands-on coaching and clear communication.
Required:
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally combining public accounting (audit) with operational or plant-level controller roles in a manufacturing environment
- Deep expertise in standard costing, Bills of Materials, variance analysis, and inventory accounting
- Hands-on experience working in or alongside manufacturing operations, including direct partnership with production, warehouse, and plant teams
- Demonstrated success leading financial cleanup or transformation efforts (GL remediation, close cycle reduction, ERP data correction, or similar)
- Strong Excel and financial modeling capabilities, with the ability to build complex models and forecasts from a blank workbook
- Solid experience with mid-market ERP platforms (Sage, NetSuite, Epicor, or similar manufacturing-oriented systems) and a practical understanding of how transactional modules flow into the general ledger
- Comfortable leading change in a hands-on environment, coaching tenured staff through process improvements with patience and respect
- CPA or CMA preferred
- Experience leading or contributing to an ERP implementation, upgrade, or multi-system consolidation
- Exposure to acquisition integration accounting or financial due diligence
- Multi-entity or multi-site manufacturing experience
- Background in implementing inventory control programs such as cycle counting or scrap tracking systems
Build from scratch. You are not stepping into an existing finance department. You are creating the financial infrastructure for a $60M+ manufacturer that has outgrown its current setup. Every process, control, and reporting framework you design will be yours.
Stability with growth. This is a 60+ year, family-owned business with no debt pressure, no exit timeline, and next-generation leadership focused on long-term value creation. The company has been profitable since its founding and is actively pursuing additional acquisitions.
Industry tailwinds. Domestic manufacturing is seeing renewed demand through reshoring and supply chain repatriation. The company's established relationships with major industrial OEMs position it to capture an outsized share of this trend.
Seat at the table. You report directly to the CEO and collaborate daily with senior leadership. This is the highest-ranking finance role in the organization, with real influence over capital allocation, growth planning, and operational strategy.
Impact beyond the spreadsheet. You will walk the plant floor, work shoulder-to-shoulder with production teams, and see the tangible results of the systems and controls you put in place.
