Description

The Controller is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for overseeing LifeStream’s accounting and financial reporting functions. This role ensures strong financial management, internal controls, and compliance with GAAP, nonprofit regulations, and organizational policies. As a key member of the finance team, the Controller plays a vital role in supporting LifeStream’s mission-driven work by safeguarding the financial health of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

· Oversee and manage all general accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.

· Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

· Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting requirements.

· Lead the annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.

Budgeting & Forecasting

· Collaborate with the CFO and leadership team to develop the annual operating budget.

· Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis and recommendations.

· Support grant budgeting, tracking, and reporting in coordination with program teams.

Internal Controls & Compliance

· Maintain and improve internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

· Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws related to nonprofit finances, including IRS and funder reporting.

· Oversee accurate and timely filing of tax and regulatory documents (e.g., IRS Form 990, MA filings).

Team Leadership & Collaboration

· Supervise finance staff and support professional development and cross-training within the team.

· Partner with departments across the organization to strengthen financial literacy and ensure effective use of resources.

· Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous learning aligned with LifeStream’s values.

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA preferred.

· Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.

· Nonprofit financial management experience strongly preferred.

· Knowledge of fund accounting, grant management, and government contract compliance.

· Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with systems such as Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, or similar is a plus.

· Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
