About the RoleJay's is looking for a high-caliber, high-producing Controller to own the financial heartbeat of our company. You'll own financial reporting and oversee the team members who handle payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and human resources across our North Carolina and Virginia locations, and you'll serve as the trusted right-hand to ownership, building the financial planning, forecasting, and reporting that drive smart decisions and fuel our growth. This is a leadership role, not a data-entry role. We work hard and play hard – we're a fun team of rock-stars with can-do attitudes who are driven, focused, and have a strong work ethic.Community Focus: Established brand with a great reputation – We are dedicated to supporting our community and veterans as well as the greater good by contributing to both local and global causesDestination Employer: Established brand with a great reputation & a strong focus on our company cultureOur Standard: We pride ourselves on providing a 5-star customer service experience and it shows with 3,000+ Google reviews (the industry average is 200); & over 1,000 5-star reviews on Facebook, & over 5,000 5-star reviews on all review platforms.Key ResponsibilitiesOwn the month-end and year-end close; deliver accurate P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statements on time, every monthProduce department-level financials (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, and Sewer) and track gross margin, overhead, and net profit against budgetServe as a strategic thought partner to ownership, building the financial infrastructure for sustained growth across all trades and locationsBuild and manage the annual budget, forecasts, and cash management; advise ownership on pricing, capital purchases, and growth decisionsAnalyze key business drivers, trends, and KPIs, and present results to leadership in a clear, easy-to-understand formatStay current on industry trends, competitive pressures, and opportunities in the home services marketAccounts Payable: oversee the AP team to ensure vendor and distributor invoices are processed accurately, statements are reconciled, and early-pay discounts are capturedAccounts Receivable: oversee the AR team's invoicing, collections, financing-partner funding, and membership/service agreement billingPayroll: oversee the payroll team to ensure accurate, on-time payroll for NC and VA employees, including technician commissions, spiffs, performance pay, and bonusesHuman Resources: oversee the HR team to ensure consistent, streamlined recruiting, onboarding, benefits and 401(k) administration, workers' comp, employee files, I-9 compliance, and the employee handbookOversee job costing and the ServiceTitan-to-accounting integration so labor, materials, and equipment are tied to every jobReview and approve bank, credit card, and loan reconciliations; manage relationships with our bank, CPA, insurance, and benefits providersCoordinate with our outside CPA on tax planning, preparation, and reporting; ensure state and federal income tax, sales tax, payroll tax, and 1099 filings are accurate and currentEstablish and enforce internal controls that protect company assetsLead and develop the AP, AR, payroll, and HR team members: set priorities and objectives, hold them accountable to KPIs, conduct effective one-on-ones, and provide ongoing guidance and feedbackShape company culture by modeling our core values, especially ethics and integrityQualificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related fieldMinimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting ManagerStrong background in full-cycle accounting and financial statement preparation, with experience overseeing AP, AR, and payroll functionsExperience supervising multi-state payroll (NC & VA) and HR functionsIn-depth understanding of debit and credit accounting, GAAP, internal controls, and tax complianceExtensive quantitative and qualitative financial analysis skills, with the ability to distill the important numbers into a strategic view of performanceStrong communication skills; able to present complex financial information to leaders clearlyProficient with Microsoft Office (advanced Excel) and accounting software (QuickBooks or similar)Proven success training and developing peoplePreferred CPA or CMA certificationAccounting experience in the home services, construction, or trades industryExperience with ServiceTitan and QuickBooksFamiliarity with Nexstar Network financial best practicesSHRM-CP or PHR certification, or HR management experienceCandidates will be required to pass a background check  upon being given a conditional offer of employment
