Job Title: Control System Engineer Level II
Department: Advanced Products
Division Manufacturing: Escanaba, MI
Shift: 1st Shift
Summary:
Design and support the full life cycle of reliable control system solutions within our heavy-duty vehicle thermal control system products. The ideal candidate would excel when working closely with cross-functional teams, possess a passion for solving complex engineering challenges, and have a strong background in vehicle thermal control systems that would include control system modelling, algorithm development, embedded implementation and validation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develop and support the integration of real-time control system solutions through all life cycle phases including requirements definition, architectural design, detailed design, implementation, test, optimization, troubleshooting, tool development, production support, variation management, customer support, and product maintenance
- Troubleshoot and debug control system solutions and related system/application issues using standard problem-solving techniques including identification of the problem, determination of root cause, creative solutions, selection of resolution, and execution of a solution
- Read, create and present technical documentation including datasheets, specifications, design proposals, test plans, reports, presentations, and project timelines for communication with engineers, managers and customers
- Ensure control system solutions meet quality standards that support the entire lifecycle of development for the needs of the business from prototype through long term maintenance
- Self-manage the development of complex control system solutions utilizing appropriate levels of interaction with team members and managers
- Mentor other engineers and technicians
- Provide technical support to engineering, service, and customers through design, analysis and testing
- Independently maintain state of the art technical knowledge through literature, news searches, seminars, and independent research
- Perform all duties as a member of the thermal system development team - balancing individual and team responsibilities, suggesting strategies for productivity improvements, contributing to building a positive team spirit and supporting everyone's efforts to succeed
Required Skills:
- Strong understanding of control system architectural design, algorithm development, implementation, and test
- Strong understanding of modelling techniques of feedback control systems
- Strong understanding of control system feedback loops and stability analysis
- Strong understanding of methodologies for tuning feedback control systems
- Capable of analyzing and assigning metrics of control system performance, stability and reliability and then recommending design changes for improvement
- Capable of modelling system dynamics and creating a control system plant model
- Capable of integrating sensors, actuators and communication interfaces into a complete embedded control system
- Capable of performing control system testing and validation
- Possess test skills including development of plans, procedures, test design, flow control, execution and report generation
- Possess problem solving and troubleshooting skills including clear identification of the problem, determination of root cause, proposal of solution alternatives, resolution selection, and execution of solution
Desired Skills:
- Understanding of vehicle cooling system theory, concepts and components
- Understanding of vehicle thermal control systems and solutions
- Understanding of vehicle diagnostic strategies and implementations
- Familiarity with motor and valve control interfaces and dynamics
- Familiarity with model-based control system design tools such as Matlab/Simulink
- Familiarity with embedded microprocessors
- Familiarity with C and C++ embedded software languages
- Familiarity with autocode generation from model-based design tools into C or C++
- Familiarity with automotive communication protocols including J1939, CAN, LIN
- Familiarity with embedded software real-time operating systems including interrupt handling, timing strategies, and memory management
- Familiarity with version control tools such as Git
- Familiarity with embedded software build tools and build environments including compilers and linkers
- Familiarity with embedded software debugging tools and interfaces
- Familiarity with electronic test equipment including oscilloscopes, multi-meters, signal generators, and power supplies
- Capable of reading a wiring schematic and taking measurements within an electrical system
- Capable of reading printed circuit board schematics and layout diagrams and taking measurements on printed circuit board assemblies
- Capable of scripting automated test sequences
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Science in Thermal Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or another related field. Preference will be given to those with 5+ years of experience and having the required skills listed below, but those with less experience will also be considered.
