    Description

Location: Sandy, Utah. You can live outside Utah if you are within one to two time zones of Mountain Time and can work most of your day during the team's core hours. Utah candidates who can come into the office when asked are a plus.
Type: Contract, 6 months plus, and it could be extended.

    About the role

Rise Talent Advisors is hiring contract software engineers for an established company in the Salt Lake area. Operations leadership has set a one to three year roadmap, and it runs on fulfillment systems that are up to 30 years old. Most of those systems are on premises and desktop based. They are brittle, deployments are hard, and rollbacks are harder.

Engineering is rebuilding one side of fulfillment in a brand new, containerized Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment. Where the work overlaps, it reuses proven patterns from a sister fulfillment team that already runs a modern AWS platform. The goal is simple: let the business change how it fulfills orders without every change becoming a major project.

You will join both teams, ship production code from your first week, and leave the internal engineers stronger in AWS and automated testing when you roll off. This is a hands on senior engineering role. It is not an architecture or data science engagement.

    The environment

Legacy fulfillment modernization (systems up to 30 years old)

    • C# across .NET Framework 4.6.1 through .NET 10, backed by SQL Server
    • WinForms desktop applications being replaced by web apps, with one pilot underway now
    • Services and web apps that run in on premises data centers. Nothing deployed today is containerized.
    • An early AWS footprint (ECS Fargate, DynamoDB, ECR, S3, IAM, Secrets Manager) plus Angular and Kafka
    • Little to no automated test coverage on the oldest systems. The team shipped its first AWS deployment only recently.

Modern fulfillment platform (built in the last 2 years)

    • C# .NET 10 on AWS (ECS Fargate, DynamoDB, ECR, S3, IAM, Secrets Manager)
    • Temporal for workflow orchestration and Kafka for event streaming
    • A test driven culture. Automated tests surround the whole system, written mostly by developers.
    • Established patterns the legacy rebuild will reuse wherever the two overlap

    What you'll do

    • Rebuild legacy services in a brand new, containerized AWS environment, starting with the most critical systems
    • Upgrade legacy .NET Framework code to modern .NET and help replace desktop apps with web applications
    • Write unit and integration tests for every service you build. Quality engineers own the end to end tests across systems.
    • Move live, business critical workloads from old systems to new ones. Distribution centers depend on these systems every day.
    • Write clean, flexible code so Operations can ask for changes without each one becoming a major project
    • Ship through daily Kanban releases, take part in code reviews, and contribute to design discussions led by the architect and engineering managers

Teaching and teamwork are part of the job

    • Join both teams and stay in the discussions. The internal teams will own these systems after you leave.
    • Teach AWS and container patterns to engineers who are new to them.
    • Use pull requests, pairing sessions, and regular check ins to teach on a distributed team
    • You'll do well here if you like sharing what you know

    Building with artificial intelligence (AI)

    • Cursor is approved for daily use. Teams keep their own skills and rules, including adversarial quality assurance setups.
    • Ideally you go beyond asking questions: you plan with AI, hand work to agents and sub agents, and review the results. This isn't required of every hire, but at least one engineer on the team should be well ahead here.

    What you need

    • Senior engineer who can work well across both technology stacks above
    • Strong C# and .NET
    • Production AWS experience with containerized services: ECS Fargate, ECR, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, and Secrets Manager
    • You write unit and integration tests as a normal part of development
    • You learn fast, work on your own, collaborate closely, and are willing and able to teach
    • Located within one to two time zones of Mountain Time, with strong overlap on core hours

    Nice to have

    • Warehouse management system, supply chain, or logistics experience
    • Advanced AI assisted development with Cursor or Claude: agents, sub agents, and AI in the delivery pipeline
    • Kafka, Temporal, Angular, or experience moving WinForms apps to the web
    • Based in Utah and able to come into the office when asked

    What's in it for you

    • Real modernization work on systems the business runs on every day
    • A 6 month plus contract that could be extended
    • A modern toolset, including approved AI coding tools
    • A recruiter who gives you straight answers and keeps you in the loop
