THE OPPORTUNITY

As a Consultant - Data Engineering, you will independently manage data engineering and analytics workstreams within client engagements - owning pipeline development, data model design, and analytics delivery with moderate oversight. This role bridges foundational data development and senior technical advisory, combining hands-on engineering capability with growing client relationship skills.

At this level, you'll be expected to independently configure and develop data platform components, design data models, and advise working-level client stakeholders on data quality and architecture decisions. AI-augmented development is a core part of how we work - you'll use AI coding tools as a standard productivity multiplier and begin introducing AI-assisted data workflows to clients.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Data Pipeline Engineering

• Design, develop, test, and deploy data pipelines across batch and streaming architectures
• Build and maintain ELT/ETL workflows using modern data stack tools: dbt, Airflow, Azure Data Factory, Fivetran, or equivalent
• Develop data ingestion connectors, transformation logic, and orchestration workflows for cloud data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Azure Synapse)
• Implement pipeline monitoring, alerting, and lineage tracking
• Own pipeline performance optimization: query tuning, partitioning strategies, and incremental load patterns

Data Modeling & Architecture

• Design dimensional and relational data models: star schemas, OBT patterns, and Data Vault 2.0 concepts
• Build and maintain dbt projects: models, tests, documentation, and semantic layer definitions
• Advise on data warehouse and lakehouse architectural patterns appropriate to client platform and use case
• Document data lineage, business glossary entries, and data dictionary content

Analytics & BI Enablement

• Develop analytics-ready datasets and semantic models for BI tool consumption (Power BI, Tableau, Looker)
• Partner with analytics and data science teams to ensure platform outputs meet downstream requirements
• Build and validate data quality frameworks: expectation suites, reconciliation logic, and anomaly detection

Client Engagement & Advisory

• Serve as day-to-day data engineering point of contact for client data engineers, analysts, and working-level data managers
• Present pipeline designs, data model decisions, and data quality findings to client technical stakeholders
• Facilitate data requirements sessions, source system workshops, and data model reviews

AI-Augmented Development

• Apply AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude) as a standard productivity accelerator across all pipeline and transformation development
• Use AI to generate dbt model scaffolding, SQL optimization suggestions, and documentation drafts - all reviewed and validated before deployment
• Introduce AI-assisted data workflow tools to client data engineering teams on applicable engagements
• Contribute documented AI use cases to 3Ci's Data AI Playbook

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Engineering, or related field
• 2-5 years of data engineering or analytics engineering experience
• Demonstrated ownership of data pipeline workstreams from design through production deployment
• Proficiency in SQL (advanced) and Python for data engineering tasks
• Hands-on experience with modern data stack tools: dbt, Airflow or equivalent orchestrator, and at least one cloud data platform (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, or Azure Synapse)
• Working knowledge of data modeling patterns: dimensional modeling, Data Vault, or lakehouse medallion architecture
• Professional AI coding tool usage in a data engineering workflow

Preferred Certifications & Credentials

• dbt Certified Analytics Engineer
• Databricks Certified Associate Developer for Apache Spark or Data Engineer Associate
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203)
• Snowflake SnowPro Core Certification
• AWS Certified Data Analytics - Specialty (or Cloud Practitioner minimum)
• GitHub Copilot certification or equivalent AI development productivity credential
