Construction Manager – Power Generation Projects

Location: Fontana Dam, NC

Position Type: Contract (12 Months)

Hourly rate:  $65/Hour

Job Overview

Johnson Service Group is seeking an experienced Construction Manager to lead construction operations and optimize performance across a variety of non-nuclear Generation construction projects (including Coal, Gas, and Hydro operations).

In this role, you will serve as the primary single point of contact for construction operations, overseeing initiatives from initial mobilization through plant startup, testing, and completion. You will lead cross-functional teams, direct external contractors, manage budgets and schedules, and drive a culture of continuous improvement while ensuring rigorous safety and environmental compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Project Execution & Site Leadership

  • End-to-End Oversight: Manage all daily site activities from initial mobilization through testing and final startup.

  • Contractor & Vendor Management: Direct and coordinate outside contractors, oversee material/equipment delivery, manage turnover interfaces, and ensure routine safety and quality inspections.

  • Planning & Scheduling: Develop and maintain integrated multifunctional outage plans, scope timelines, resource allocation, and budget/cost forecasts using standard project management tools.

  • Scope & Risk Management: Proactively identify project risks, execute baseline change controls, implement contingency plans, and maintain complete RFI logs and project documentation.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitate daily/weekly Joint Project Team meetings, present regular progress reports, and collaborate effectively with labor union representatives to maintain positive working relationships.

Safety, Environmental & Quality Control

  • Culture of Safety: Drive a "Zero Injuries" safety culture, enforce OSHA 10 standards at minimum, approve Job Safety Analysis (JSA) reviews, and implement Behavior-Based Safety and Environmental programs.

  • Process Compliance: Ensure compliance with all internal health, safety, and environmental procedures, including proper badging, plant orientation, and completion of required site checklists.

  • Quality Assurance: Implement robust QA/QC processes, lead constructability reviews, conduct root cause analyses for scheduling or cost variances, and participate in post-outage lessons learned reviews.

Qualifications & Requirements

Experience & Domain Knowledge

  • Minimum Experience: 10+ years of proven utility Construction Manager or Project Manager experience in power generation environment.

  • Technical Expertise: Deep experience in Coal, Gas, or Hydro power plant construction/maintenance, with strong working knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulations.

  • Project Management Skills: Expertise in project scoping, cost estimating, contract management, budgeting, scheduling, and reading complex blueprints and technical drawings.

Education & Credentials

  • Education: Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Construction, or a technical field (or equivalent Journeyman training / relevant work experience). Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

  • Certifications: PMP, SCWI, or related professional certifications preferred.

Core Competencies

  • Strong leadership, negotiation, and cross-functional influence skills.

  • Proficient in project management software and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with high ethical and safety standards.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Sensitive Security clearance if required by project scope.
