    Construction Laborer-Utility Person | Field Operations

    Schedule 7:30a.m. - 3:30p.m.

    Hands-on, dependable, and team-oriented-someone who takes pride in physical work and keeping the city running safely and smoothly.

    What You'll Do

    You'll support the City's water, sewer, and stormwater operations by performing hands-on construction, maintenance, and equipment work that keeps Fort Wayne's infrastructure operating every day.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Operate heavy trucks, front-end loaders, and related equipment for utility operations

    • Install, repair, and maintain water and sewer infrastructure such as hydrants, mains, valves, and laterals

    • Perform construction and repair work using hand and power tools, concrete, mortar, and asphalt

    • Complete inspections, pre-trip vehicle checks, and routine equipment maintenance

    • Work closely with City crews, assist with training, and follow all safety requirements

    What You Bring - Education & Experience

    • High school diploma or equivalent

    • Experience in construction, utilities, or outdoor labor preferred

    • Ability to perform physically demanding work in all weather conditions

    Preferred Certifications

    • CDL Class A (or willingness to obtain; learner's permit required)

    • Certified Competent Person: Excavation & Trench

    • Confined Space Certification

    Technical Skills & Knowledge

    • Basic math, technical, and communication skills

    • Ability to safely use tools, equipment, and vehicles

    • Strong safety awareness and ability to follow procedures
