Reports To: Construction Inspection Supervisor

Position Summary: Our client is seeking a skilled Construction Inspector who will be responsible for conducting field and lab inspections, testing materials, and overseeing construction activities for public infrastructure projects including streets, sidewalks, storm drains, water/sewer systems, and related facilities. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical knowledge, experience in construction inspection, and the ability to lead and train junior inspectors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect construction, repair, or alteration work on major public works projects.
  • Measure and verify materials used for streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains, water/sewer systems, landscaping, and related infrastructure.
  • Perform field sampling and lab testing of construction materials; analyze results and generate detailed reports.
  • Approve materials for project use and authorize necessary field changes to plans.
  • Lead and train lower-level inspectors; coordinate daily work schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable construction codes, project specifications, and safety regulations.
  • Serve as liaison between contractors, engineers, utility providers, and city departments.
  • Maintain detailed project documentation including daily logs, change orders, and payment records.
  • Conduct construction surveys and track contractor progress.
  • Respond to public inquiries and resolve complaints related to construction activities.
  • Promote and maintain a safe work environment on all project sites.

Required Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year of directly related college-level coursework in construction inspection, civil engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in construction inspection, paraprofessional engineering, or public works-related fieldwork.
Technical Knowledge & Skills:
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and codes.
  • Knowledge of construction materials such as concrete, asphalt, and piping.
  • Experience with public infrastructure systems (e.g., streets, storm drains, utilities).
  • Strong understanding of federal, state, and local construction regulations and codes.
  • Ability to perform field and lab testing on construction materials and document findings.
  • Capable of preparing detailed technical reports and maintaining comprehensive records.
  • Competency in using computer software for reporting and documentation.
Soft Skills:
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making in the field.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and motivate team members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working with public officials, contractors, and the community.

Working Conditions
This role involves both office and outdoor field work. Candidates must be able to:
  • Sit, stand, walk, climb ladders, kneel, crouch, and bend for extended periods.
  • Lift and carry tools and materials weighing up to 25 pounds or more.
  • Tolerate all weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Work in environments with loud noise, dust, and vehicular traffic.
  • Occasionally work weekends or extended hours based on project needs.

Additional Information
  • Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required.
  • Position includes use of city vehicles and construction testing equipment.
