    Description

Compressed Air Systems Field Service Engineer

Serving: Fredericksburg • Stafford • Williamsburg • Petersburg, VA

Are you the go-to problem solver?

When a plant’s air system falters, you step in—confident with your meter, grounded in your manuals, and focused on uptime. At Ingersoll Rand, you’ll own the install-to-repair lifecycle for rotary screw, reciprocating, and Centac/ECC compressors and the systems that surround them.

    Your mission

    1. Diagnose precisely: apply precision measuring tools and data-driven methods to find root causes fast.
    2. Fix it right: perform installations, corrective repairs, and preventative maintenance across compressors, dryers, cooling towers, and filtration.
    3. Elevate others: train customers, collaborate with sales, and mentor service trainees.
    4. Communicate clearly: craft legible, detailed service reports ready for billing; brief the manufacturing facility on findings and next steps.
    5. Lead yourself: manage your time, expenses, and company resources with integrity and professionalism.

    What it takes to win

    • 2–5 years of hands-on troubleshooting in industrial/commercial mechanical systems; exposure to compressed air, centrifugal technology, or controls is a strong plus. Experience starting up/servicing rotary and centrifugal compressors (including dryers, cooling towers, filtration) is beneficial.
    • High school diploma or GED.
    • Valid driver’s license held for 12+ months with a safe record—no major or frequent violations (e.g., DUI within 5 years; hit-and-run; license suspension; reckless/careless driving; or multiple minor/preventable incidents in the last 3 years).

    Skills that set you apart

    • Comfort with Microsoft Office and everyday computing; adept with smartphones/tablets and network-based tools.
    • Customer-first communication, conflict resolution, and negotiation.
    • Efficient travel planning and disciplined business practices.
    • Mechanical competence to learn, diagnose, and troubleshoot complex compressor machinery.

    Bonus points

    • Studies in Electrical/Electronic Technology or HVAC; knowledge spanning AC/DC circuits, schematics, motors/controls, PLCs, HVAC electricity and controls, and refrigeration. Refrigerant certification helps. Military or significant mechanical experience welcomed. Equivalent skills without a formal program considered.
    • EPA 608 and/or F-GAS 303/2008/CE/ISHRAE certification preferred; refrigeration background is a plus.

    Where you’ll work

    • Mechanical rooms with running equipment; outdoors in extreme weather; tight or elevated spaces; and around high voltage under NFPA or equivalent safety standards.
    • Physical activity is routine: walking, stooping, kneeling, dexterous hand work, and lifting/moving per safety policy.

    Travel and on-call

    • Training trips 1–2 times annually, about a week each (5–10%).
    • Shared on-call rotation to respond to evening/weekend emergencies during assigned weeks.
