    Description

Compressed Air Systems Field Engineer (Service)

Location: Washington DC - Baltimore, MD

Are you the go-to problem solver on complex machinery?

If you love diving into schematics, measuring performance with precision tools, and leaving customers confident in their equipment, this role is for you. In our Industrial Technologies and Services Division, you’ll install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain rotary screw, reciprocating, and Centac/ECC air compressors—plus the connected ecosystem: dryers, filtration, and cooling assets.

    What challenges will you tackle?

    • Own onsite installation, preventive maintenance, and field repairs for Ingersoll Rand equipment at customer locations.
    • Diagnose issues methodically using precision instruments; validate fixes and document results.
    • Master relevant operations and parts manuals; keep current with field practices and standards.
    • Teach others—customers, prospects, field sales, and service trainees—how to run and care for their systems.
    • Work independently: assess problems, recommend corrective actions, and report clearly to the manufacturing facility.
    • Operate with uncompromising integrity; communicate findings in clear, logical terms.
    • Produce detailed, legible service reports suitable for billing after every call.
    • File precise weekly timecards and expenses; responsibly manage company credit card and (if assigned) a company vehicle.

    Do you have the profile?

    • 2+ years’ experience troubleshooting industrial/commercial mechanical systems.
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Valid driver’s license for at least 12 months with a clean record—no major or frequent violations (including but not limited to DUI in the past 5 years, Hit & Run, License Suspension, Reckless/Careless Driving, or multiple smaller infractions/preventable collisions within 3 years).
    • Comfort working in mechanical rooms, around loud equipment, in extreme weather or precarious locations, and near high voltage per NFPA or equivalent standards.
    • Physically able to use hands/fingers routinely; walk, stoop, kneel; and lift/move per safety policy.
    • Fluent with Microsoft Office; adept with smartphones/iPads and network-based tools.
    • Polished customer service skills—communication, conflict resolution, and negotiation—and cost-conscious travel habits.
    • Mechanical strength to learn, diagnose, and service compressor systems and allied machinery.

    What sets you apart

    • EPA 608 / F-GAS 303/2008/CE/ISHRAE certifications (refrigeration background a plus).
    • Hands-on time with compressed air systems, centrifugal technologies, and controls; exposure to dryers, cooling towers, and filtration.
    • Education in Electrical/Electronic Technology or HVAC: AC/DC circuits, wiring diagrams/schematics, motors/controls, PLCs, HVAC electricity/controls, refrigeration systems, and/or refrigerant certification. Military or equivalent mechanical experience welcomed. Candidates with the skills but no formal program may be considered.

    How we work—travel & on-call

    • Occasional travel for training—1–2 trips per year, about one week each (roughly 5–10%).
    • Participate in a local on-call rotation to handle customer emergencies; some evenings/weekends during assigned weeks.

    Own your impact—benefits

We embrace a culture of ownership. Expect comprehensive benefits: medical and prescription coverage, dental and vision, wellness programs, life insurance, a robust 401(k), paid time off, and an employee stock grant.
