Job Description:
Key Responsibilities
Support the laser and radiation safety team through lab inspections, equipment purchase evaluations, R&D experiment reviews, and laser exposure calculations and measurements.
Audit laboratories for laser and radiation safety compliance.
Analyze safety hazards and develop safety requirements for hardware containing lasers, LEDs, and X-ray generating equipment.
Establish and maintain area controls for employees working around laser and radiation sources.
Create, review, and approve laser and optical hazard-related SOPs.
Review and approve work completed by external laser service technicians.
Conduct power, spectral, and temporal measurements for laser and LED sources.
Implement radiation safety program requirements and perform X-ray leakage surveys.
Perform testing to simulate faults and validate the optical safety of equipment.
Identify corrective actions and communicate recommendations to stakeholders.
Coordinate with research, engineering, and product teams to maintain safety compliance.
Support additional EHS programs including LOTO, lab safety, chemical safety, electrical safety, and machine guarding.
Requirements
5+ years of experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
Equivalent direct experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) or Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience conducting safety investigations, failure analysis activities, or development-related safety reviews.
Familiarity with lasers, LEDs, and X-ray generating devices.
Experience supporting technical or engineering environments involving testing, reliability, or field evaluations.
Strong understanding of ANSI Z136.1, The American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers.
Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience serving as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and/or Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
Experience supporting hardware research, engineering, or production environments.
Proficiency with FDA/CDRH FLPPS requirements.
Experience working with IEC 60825-1 and IEC 62471-1 standards.
CLSO certification.
Ability to influence cross-functional teams through technical leadership and analysis.
