Position Overview
This position is located in the CARE Center, Adult Services Section.
Examples of Duties
The CARE Center Family Violence Program has the responsibility to provide comprehensive services to persons experiencing intra-family violence. These services include emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis telephone lines, paralegal services, and counseling for all members of the family.
This position calls for providing emotional support and a stable environment for victims of domestic violence residing in the CARE Center Emergency Shelter. The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the day-to-day operation of the shelter. This position is responsible for welcoming victims and children entering the shelter and helping them get acquainted with their surroundings. The person in this position answers the crisis line and completes an initial assessment in order to respond appropriately to the situation. The individual in this role is tasked with ensuring cleanliness throughout the shelter. This includes regular inspections to identify areas needing attention, cleaning and sanitizing, as well as maintaining common areas, restrooms, and sleeping quarters. This position is responsible for supervising shelter residents in the completion of household chores, explaining shelter guidelines, providing opportunities for recreation, assisting with meal preparation, resolving disagreements that may arise, and providing life skills coaching. This position gathers information from victims, prepares paperwork, and provides the information to CARE Center Counselors for appropriate service plan development. The worker must complete accurate written documentation of crisis calls, required shelter reports and activities, shelter intake activities, and completed training. The schedule varies with a 40-hour work week. Normal hours are evening and early morning hours Monday through Friday. Both day and evening hours are required on weekends and holidays. This position involves overnight stays at the shelter. The worker must be able to work independently and use good judgment with minimal on-site supervision.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical effort expended in this position is normally limited to the moving of light objects such as groceries or cleaning supplies. The worker may also assist clients with luggage or other personal belongings. This person may be required to transport a client or travel to the CARE Center office on occasion. The person must be able to walk up and down a flight of stairs in order to secure the building and to ensure safe shelter operations.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills, and abilities gained through two years of experience in performing similar instructional and community placement tasks; or graduation from a two-year associate degree program designed to prepare support personnel for human services agencies which includes a six month practice/internship in a similar setting (one year of the above experience may be substituted for the practice).
PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:An associate degree in a Human Services field and experience in crisis intervention is preferred OR High School and at least six (6) months of additional training or experience in a group home or shelter setting in addition to the required minimum education and experience.

Individual Training- Considerable knowledge of and skill in enlisting available community supportive resources for individuals served; considerable knowledge of social, economic, and environmental conditions of clients to be served; considerable knowledge of various types of housing and potential employers for skilled and non-skilled areas; skill in basic reading, writing, and simple mathematics; skill in appraising needs and exercising good judgment in decision-making; skill in establishing rapport with clients and variety of service delivery disciplines and community business personnel; ability to verbally communicate findings.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of instructional techniques effective in-groups; skill in facilitating group discussions.
