About TCNJ

The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is a highly selective institution that is consistently recognized as one of the top comprehensive colleges in the nation. Founded in 1855 as the New Jersey State Normal School, TCNJ maintains the eighth highest four-year graduation rate among all public colleges and universities. It is ranked by Money as one of the top 15 public colleges "most likely to pay off financially," and U.S. News & World Report rates it the No. 1 public institution among regional universities in the northeast.

Position Overview:

As a CEL Leader, you will play a vital role within the First-Year Community Engaged Learning (FYCEL) program. FYCEL is a graduation requirement completed by first-year students through FYC 100 which is a two-week course featuring three classroom sessions and a half-day of community service addressing unmet regional needs.

CEL Leaders are the driving force (quite literally!) behind this program. We train you to manage logistics, drive 12-passenger vans, and facilitate weekly service trips. If you love working with people, care about making a difference, and want to develop leadership skills, this is the role for you.

Required Qualifications:

  • You MUST have a FULL LICENSE (Not Provisional).

  • You do not need to have driving experience of large vans or college vehicles.

  • A proven track record of excellent time management and commitment to scheduled shifts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A genuine enjoyment for working with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and collaborative problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend and complete all required trainings.

  • Safely operate 12-passenger vans to transport first-year students to and from community service sites.

  • Meet students before shifts, take attendance, and guide them through their service experience.

  • Represent TCNJ professionally while building positive relationships with first-year students and local community partners.

Required Trainings:

  • SafeColleges Online Van Training

  • CEL Leader responsibilities Training

  • In-Person van driving training with CEL staff

Learning Objectives:

  • Leadership skills leading groups of students

  • Effective written and oral communication

  • Problem solving
