Job Summary
The Beautywell Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to challenging harmful beauty standards associated with colorism and skin-lightening practices. Through education, advocacy, and community empowerment, the organization promotes healthier self-perception, raises awareness about toxic ingredients, and encourages communities to embrace natural beauty and well-being.
The Communications & Development Manager will serve as a strategic storyteller and fundraising partner responsible for strengthening the organization's visibility, engagement, and long-term sustainability. This position will lead public relations efforts for an upcoming major documentary, manage digital communications and content, develop relationships with media professionals, and identify new funding opportunities. The role will work closely with the Executive Director to develop fundraising strategies and expand the organization's impact.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as the lead communications and PR contact for the organization's upcoming documentary launch.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive public relations strategy to increase awareness and visibility.
- Draft press releases, media pitches, talking points, and other external communications.
- Coordinate media screenings and outreach related to the documentary launch.
- Pitch stories to local, national, and ethnic media outlets.
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists, influencers, and media partners.
- Increase public awareness of colorism, skin-lightening health risks, and related public health issues.
- Maintain a consistent, culturally sensitive organizational voice across all communication channels.
- Partner with the Executive Director to develop and execute a diversified fundraising strategy.
- Identify individual giving, corporate sponsorship, foundation, and other funding opportunities.
- Research relevant grant opportunities and prepare compelling grant proposals.
- Manage grant deadlines, requirements, and reporting to current funders.
- Develop and manage digital fundraising campaigns and annual giving appeals.
- Create donor communications, including newsletters and engagement materials.
- Oversee the organization's website, social media channels, and monthly email newsletters.
- Develop engaging blog posts, social media content, impact reports, and other digital materials.
- Monitor digital engagement, audience growth, and campaign performance.
- Use analytics and performance data to continuously improve communication and outreach strategies.
- Collaborate with organizational leadership and community partners to ensure messaging aligns with The Beautywell Project's mission and goals.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of professional experience in communications, public relations, fundraising, development, or a related field.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Experience developing content for multiple communication channels and audiences.
- Experience with social media management tools.
- Proficiency with WordPress or similar website content management systems.
- Experience with email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, campaigns, deadlines, and priorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop relationships with media professionals, donors, funders, partners, and other stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within a nonprofit, public health, advocacy, or community-based organization.
- Grant writing and grant management experience.
- Experience developing or executing fundraising strategies.
- Experience managing media relations or public relations campaigns.
- Experience supporting documentary, film, or major media launches.
- Experience developing corporate sponsorships and individual giving campaigns.
- Knowledge of digital marketing analytics and performance measurement.
- Understanding of colorism, racial justice, public health, and issues surrounding skin-lightening products and chemical exposure.
- Experience creating culturally sensitive communications for diverse communities.
- Strong commitment to The Beautywell Project's mission and values.
Work Environment / Schedule
- Part-time position requiring approximately 25–30 hours per week.
- Hybrid work environment based in St. Paul, Minnesota.
- Exceptional candidates may be considered for a fully remote/virtual arrangement.
- Requires regular collaboration with the Executive Director, organizational partners, media professionals, donors, funders, and community stakeholders.
- Schedule may require flexibility around documentary launch activities, media events, fundraising campaigns, and organizational deadlines.
