STARTING Salary: $ 126.62 / DAY

Primary Purpose:

Serve as a communication facilitator of all communication between the auditorily impaired student, hearing peers, and the special education teachers in a variety of educational settings.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas Educational Aide Certification
  • Para-Pro Test (No Child Left Behind)/48 College Hours

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Willingness to participate in training programs and on-the-job training to meet educational and communication needs of impaired students in special education classes and special vocational classes as needed
  • Basic sign language skills required to assist auditorily impaired students in communicating with all persons in the special education setting
  • Sufficient physical stamina to ensure the comfort and safety of handicapped students; sufficient sign language skills for position

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local Board Policy
  • Serve as a communication facilitator in a variety of special education classes
  • Provide a language rich experience including sign language, gestures, verbal communication, picture and icon systems to assist students in developing an independent communication system
  • Inform the responsible teacher and appropriate staff of any problems that may occur in the classroom
  • Work with mainstream teachers, as needed, in order to be better prepared for the classroom
  • Assist with materials, classroom routines and organization as directed
  • Help monitor student activities
  • Assist with data collection and progress monitoring of skills
  • Assist students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene
  • Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention, including restraining disruptive or dangerous physical behavior as needed
  • Assist teachers between assignments working with students as needed or performing clerical duties
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Personal computer, copier, audio-visual equipment, closed captioning for the hearing impaired, amplification devices
