Overview

The Director of Commissioning leads and supports teams responsible for ensuring that building systems are designed, installed, and operated in alignment with the Owner’s operational requirements and the Engineer’s design intent. This role regularly engages with owners, their representatives, contractors, engineers, and architects to carry out essential responsibilities.

Responsibilities
• Lead and support teams responsible for ensuring building systems are designed, installed, and operated per project requirements.
• Mentor and develop commissioning professionals, establishing performance standards and conducting evaluations.
• Collaborate with clients, internal teams, and external partners to define, document, and communicate project requirements.
• Manage incoming project information and support accurate execution by commissioning agents and technicians.
• Implement and maintain processes for status tracking and reporting to clients and stakeholders.
• Ensure all communications to clients, contractors, and consultants are documented and properly executed.
• Identify scope or performance gaps and drive corrective actions.
• Develop and negotiate fee proposals, including labor-hour estimates.
• Oversee KPIs and project performance metrics to ensure project health and continuous improvement.
• Provide input on commissioning standards, processes, and best practices to leadership.
• Support business development activities, including client interviews and opportunity pursuit.
• Lead and participate in the commissioning process across all projects.
• Participate in owner training activities as needed.
• Manage project commissioning budgets and ensure efficient project delivery.
• Assess project feasibility and profitability prior to approval.
• Cultivate a collaborative and accountable team culture aligned with organizational core values.

Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field.
• 8+ years of commissioning or related building construction experience, including mechanical, plumbing, automatic temperature control systems, and testing/adjusting/balancing.
• Comprehensive knowledge of building systems such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, controls, and building enclosure.
• Deep understanding of the commercial construction process.
• Strong leadership skills with a focus on employee development.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Industry knowledge of competitors and market trends.
• Certification in commissioning (e.g., NEBB, ACG, BCxA, ASHRAE, etc.).
• Proficiency with cloud-based commissioning software platforms.
• Ability to interact professionally with owners, representatives, contractors, engineers, and architects.
• Ability to lead, mentor, and build collaborative relationships.

Preferred Qualifications
• Registered Engineering Intern (EI) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
• 5+ years in a leadership role.

Travel Requirements
• 25%-40% of time spent traveling to project sites or office locations.

Physical Activities
• Ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles.
• Moving self and objects up to 50 pounds.
• Repetitive motions involving wrists, hands, and fingers.
• Environments include outdoor elements, noisy, and quiet settings.
