Job Summary/Basic Function:

Provision of primary care medicine to students, including assessment, diagnosis, and the implementation of a treatment plan in accordance with a collaborative relationship with the Director of Student Health Services. Emphasis is placed on primary prevention and health/wellness education. Reports to the Director of Student Health Services.

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (Full-Time)

SUNY Potsdam is seeking a full-time Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to provide high-quality, student-centered psychiatric care within the College Counseling Center. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will serve as an integral member of a multidisciplinary behavioral health team, providing comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, psychotherapy, medication management, consultation, and education to support the mental health and well-being of SUNY Potsdam students.

The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, clinical excellence, sound judgment, and a commitment to SUNY Potsdam's mission, vision, and values while adhering to all institutional policies, ethical standards, and applicable federal and New York State regulations. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will protect students' autonomy, dignity, rights, values, and beliefs while providing compassionate, culturally responsive, trauma-informed care.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including assessment of mental health conditions, psychosocial functioning, trauma history, and risk factors.
• Assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders in individuals using evidence-based psychiatric practices.
• Develop, implement, monitor, and revise individualized treatment plans.
• Prescribe, adjust, and monitor psychotropic medications while evaluating therapeutic effectiveness and potential side effects.
• Provide psychotherapy, supportive counseling, psychoeducation, and brief therapeutic interventions appropriate to the college population.
• Educate students and, when appropriate, their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, medications, and strategies that promote recovery and wellness.
• Counsel students regarding healthy lifestyle practices and behaviors that support emotional well-being and treatment outcomes.
• Consult and collaborate with counseling center clinicians, primary care providers, Student Health Services staff, and other campus and community partners to coordinate comprehensive care.
• Participate in case consultations and interdisciplinary treatment planning.
• Evaluate students' functional status and provide recommendations regarding medical leaves of absence, return-to-campus planning, academic accommodations, and other clinically indicated interventions.
• Maintain timely, accurate, and complete clinical documentation in the electronic health record in accordance with professional standards, legal requirements, and institutional policies.
• Contribute to program development, quality improvement initiatives, clinical policy development, and other program management activities.
• Communicate effectively with members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
• Apply ethical principles and professional standards in all aspects of clinical decision-making.
• Treat students, families, colleagues, and campus partners with respect, dignity, compassion, and cultural sensitivity.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated expertise in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders.
• Strong knowledge of psychopharmacology and evidence-based psychiatric interventions.
• Ability to provide both psychotherapy and medication management.
• Knowledge of clinical interviewing, mental status examinations, and behavioral health assessment techniques.
• Excellent clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
• Ability to establish therapeutic relationships with a diverse college student population.
• Commitment to ethical practice, cultural humility, trauma-informed care, and student-centered treatment.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• Current New York State licensure (or eligibility for licensure) as a Registered Professional Nurse and certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner) by the New York State Education Department.
• Current DEA registration and New York State authority to prescribe controlled substances (or eligibility to obtain).
• National certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) from the ANCC.
• Experience providing psychiatric assessment, psychotherapy, and medication management.
