Position Description

POSITION DESRIPTION

The City of Fresno is seeking an experienced Collection System Maintenance Specialist to help maintain and improve our vital wastewater collection system. If you have hands-on skills in sewer cleaning, CCTV inspections, lift station servicing, pipeline repairs, and related fieldwork - make a real impact and apply today!

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Clean sewer lines using hydro-flushing and rodding equipment
  • Conduct CCTV inspections of wastewater pipelines
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair lift stations and related equipment
  • Install and repair pipelines, manholes, and service connections
  • Respond to system alarms and emergency service calls
  • Follow safety protocols and set up proper traffic control at job sites
  • Operate and maintain a variety of manual and power tools
  • Investigate and resolve customer service requests and complaints
  • Complete service orders, work reports, and time records accurately
  • Perform related duties as required

Incumbents may be assigned to work on-call, standby, and holidays. Duties and schedules may vary by assignment, please inquire about specific duties and/or schedules if called upon for an interview.

The current vacancy is in the Wastewater Management Division of the Public Utilities Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the Citys discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.

THE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list:

Education:

Possession of a High School diploma or equivalent GED completion

Experience:

Two (2) years of full-time paid experience performing manual, semi-skilled and skilled work using mechanical equipment and related tools in the cleaning, maintenance, inspection, repair, and construction of wastewater collection systems.

Special Requirement(s):

Possession of a valid California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) Grade II Collection System Maintenance certificate is required at the time of application and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in the classification.

Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with Tanker endorsement and without airbrake restriction is required at time of application and continued maintenance throughout entire term of employment in the classification.

You must attach your (CWEA) Grade II Collection System Maintenance certificate and Class B California Driver's License with tanker endorsement to your application. Applications lacking required documents will be rejected.

Depending upon assignment, may be required to obtain and maintain throughout the entire term of employment in the classification a Class A California Driver's License with appropriate endorsements within six (6) months of request from department.

The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.

Some positions have been designated as being safety sensitive and require all eligibles offered employment to successfully pass a drug test prior to employment. Federal law requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue service vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials, or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial drivers license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment. This classification is subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout the entire term of employment in this class.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

The examination process may consist of the following:

The written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of September 28, 2026.

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the competitive examination to qualify for the eligible list. The City of Fresno reserves the right to amend any phase of the examination process should there be a limited number of applicants or successful candidates. Should such amendment be exercised, a candidates final score and placement on the eligible list would be based upon the completed test phase(s).

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE

Qualified veterans who pass the examination may obtain five (5) additional points.

Candidates applying for veterans preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veterans preference credit is requested.
