Coil Receiving & Inventory Control Coordinator

Location: Grandville, MI

Reports To: Production Manager

Collaborates With: Production, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, Tool Room, Scheduling, Material Handling, Purchasing

Every minute on the press line counts. Your mission is to make sure the right steel coil is in the right place at the right time—safely, cleanly, and accurately—so production never skips a beat.

Imagine this

In 30 minutes, a press changeover begins. You’ve already verified the next coil’s specs, executed the Plex transfer, printed a fresh tag, and staged the coil at the machine. When the operator calls, you’re there to assist with the coil change, and the line restarts on schedule with zero material-related downtime.

What you'll do

Material flow and support

• Receive, inspect, move, store, and stage steel coils to align with the production plan.
• Pre-stage coils for upcoming jobs; support operators with coil changes and setups.
• Keep the steel bay safe and organized—remove banding, debris, and complete daily 5S.

Inventory integrity

• Verify thickness, width, and condition of incoming coils against paperwork.
• Perform Plex transactions to receive, transfer, reweigh, retag, stage, or reject as needed.
• Maintain exact IDs, weights, tags, system locations, and receiving documentation.

Cross-functional impact

• Partner with Engineering to provide coil strips for tooling tryouts and development activities.
• Support Quality by sorting/reworking nonconforming product per established instructions and required rates.
• Assist Operations with trash, cardboard, scrap hoppers, and other assignments when time allows.

Safety & equipment

• Conduct required daily safety inspections.
• Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, crane scales, and other handling equipment safely.
• Report unsafe conditions, equipment issues, damaged material, and repair needs immediately.
• Maintain current forklift and overhead crane certifications.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be able to read and write; English proficiency required.
• Strong hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
• Able to lift, carry, and move up to 35 pounds independently.
• Comfort with frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, reaching, and climbing.
• Capable of safely operating material-handling equipment for the full workday.

Work environment & PPE

• Manufacturing environment with continuous noise and moving equipment.
• Exposure to dust, grease, moisture, fumes, strong odors, chemicals, heated tanks, and variable temperatures.
• Potential exposure to cuts, burns, and other hazards—strict safety compliance required.
• Intermittent outdoor weather exposure.
• Safety glasses and hearing protection required; additional PPE as task/area dictates.

Measures of success

• Safe, consistent operation of forklifts, overhead cranes, crane scales, and all handling equipment.
• Completion of Steel Handler training (Form O3055) and demonstration of skills to the Team Leader.
• Expert Plex usage: receiving, container moves, tag creation/reprint, weight adjustments, and coil rejection.
• High accuracy in receiving data, coil identification, weights, tags, system locations, and paperwork.
• Timely staging and delivery of coils to meet production schedules and reduce downtime.
• Proper application of measuring devices and standard handling procedures.
• Steel bay cleanliness, organization, and daily 5S performance.
• Maintenance of current forklift and overhead crane certifications.
