Cocke/Hawkins Upward Bound Academic Advisor

DESCRIPTION:

Tusculum University is seeking qualified applicants for an Upward Bound Academic Advisor serving 9th-12th grade students in surrounding Cocke and Hawkins Counties. This 12-month, full-time position reports to the Director of Cocke/Hawkins Upward Bound and requires periodic evening and weekend work. The Academic Advisor provides educational and career guidance to high school students as part of the university's Cocke/Hawkins Upward Bound program which is designed to encourage high school and college completion. Duties include identifying, recruiting, and selecting participants; collecting and maintaining data; conducting small group sessions; designing and participating in program activities (some activities require physical exertion); collaboration with school personnel and parents. The Upward Bound Academic Advisor must have a commitment to the philosophy and goals of the program and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree (master's preferred) and 2 years' work experience in education, social or behavioral sciences, student personnel, or related field; candidates must have knowledge and experience working with disadvantaged students and a commitment to the philosophy and goals of the program.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. The employee will be required to work irregular hours including nights and weekends;
• Able to lift up to 25 pounds on occasion;
• Communicate effectively;
• Must be able to walk distances, sit or stand for long periods of time, and climb stairs.
• Ability to talk and hear;
• Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus;
• Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel from the campus to target-area schools and school district offices.
