CNC Setup Machinist (or CNC Set-Up Operator) is responsible for preparing, calibrating, and tooling computer numerical control machines—such as mills or lathes—so they can run production jobs safely and accurately. [1, 2, 3]

Key Responsibilities

  • Read Blueprints & Setup Sheets: Interpret engineering drawings, digital work instructions, and tool lists to understand part specs and tolerances. [1]
  • Install Tooling & Fixtures: Load cutting tools, toolholders, vises, chucks, or custom soft jaws into the machine. [1, 2, 3]
  • Set Offsets & Zero Points: Establish tool length offsets, tool diameter compensations, and part zero (work coordinate system like G54) using edge finders, tool setters, or probes. [1, 2]
  • Load & Verify Programs: Transfer G-code part programs into the controller and run dry cycles or single-block checks to prevent tool crashes. [1, 2, 3]
  • First Article Inspection: Machine the first piece, measure it using precision instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gages), and adjust tool wear or geometry offsets to hold tight tolerances. [1, 2]
  • Machine Maintenance: Monitor coolant concentration, lubrication levels, and check for mechanical or air/hydraulic pressure issues. [1, 2]

    Step-by-Step CNC Setup Workflow
    • Clean & Inspect: Clear chips and debris from the machine table, bed, or vise surfaces.
    • Pre-check Levels: Verify machine warm-up, way lube, pneumatic pressure, and coolant concentration (typically 5–8%).
    • Load Tooling: Insert required tools into toolholders and place them in the automatic tool changer (ATC) or spindle.
    • Set Tool & Work Offsets: Measure tool lengths/diameters and touch off or probe your part zero (X, Y, and Z axes).
    • Install Workholding: Secure the raw material blank or casting using vices, clamps, or vacuum fixtures.
    • Load & Test G-Code: Upload the program file, run a graphics simulation or a slow dry run above the part, and keep a hand on the feed hold button. [1, 2, 3, 4]
