CNC Machinist Trainee

Madden Industrial Craftsmen is seeking a CNC Machinist Trainee for a long-term, day shift opportunity with a heavy industrial machine shop in NW Portland, OR. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with basic machining exposure, mechanical experience, or strong mechanical aptitude who is interested in developing their skills and growing into a skilled CNC Machinist.

The shop specializes in machining large and intricate components weighing up to 100,000 lbs. While previous machining experience is preferred, the company is willing to train the right mechanically inclined candidate who demonstrates a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and desire to learn the trade.

Pay: $21–$24/hour DOE

CNC Machinist Trainee Responsibilities:

• Assist with the setup and operation of machining equipment, including horizontal mills, vertical boring mills, lathes, and other CNC and manual equipment.

• Learn proper machine setup, tooling, workholding, and machining processes under the direction of experienced machinists.

• Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, dimensions, and machining instructions.

• Use measuring and inspection tools such as micrometers and calipers to verify dimensions and quality.

• Deburr, inspect, and prepare machined components for subsequent operations or shipment.

• Assist with the safe setup and handling of large and heavy components.

• Learn proper crane operation and large-component handling procedures; training will be provided.

• Maintain an organized work area and follow established shop and safety procedures.

• Develop machining skills and production capabilities through hands-on training and experience.

CNC Machinist Trainee Qualifications:

• Previous machining, manufacturing, mechanical, automotive, fabrication, maintenance, or similar hands-on experience is preferred but not required.

• Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in learning CNC and manual machining.

• Basic familiarity with hand tools, measuring tools, blueprints, or mechanical drawings is a plus.

• Ability to learn how to use precision measuring equipment and understand machining tolerances.

• Comfortable working around large industrial equipment and components.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.

• Reliable, safety-conscious, and willing to learn from experienced machinists.

• Ability to take direction and progressively work more independently as skills develop.
