Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Manager

Location: Tempe, AZ
Salary: $65,000–$95,000 annually

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Manager to lead field operations, technical quality, and project execution for construction materials testing and special inspection projects.

This position will oversee technicians and field staff, provide technical guidance on complex projects, manage QA/QC processes, coordinate staffing and resources, and help ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with applicable codes, specifications, and client requirements.

The CMT Manager will also maintain client relationships, assist with scopes, estimates, and proposals, and serve as a senior technical resource for project teams.

Primary Responsibilities

• Lead, supervise, mentor, and support CMT technicians, inspectors, and field staff.

• Provide technical direction for construction observation, special inspections, and field and laboratory testing.

• Oversee QA/QC processes and review testing, inspection, and project documentation.

• Review and interpret construction plans, specifications, testing requirements, and applicable codes.

• Serve as a technical resource for resolving complex construction and materials testing issues.

• Manage projects, staffing, scheduling, budgets, and technical resources.

• Maintain communication with clients, contractors, project managers, and construction teams.

• Provide technical recommendations based on field conditions, testing results, and project requirements.

• Assist with scopes of work, fee estimates, proposals, and project planning.

• Attend client, preconstruction, and project meetings as needed.

• Support process improvements, staff development, and safe work practices.

• Perform or assist with field and laboratory testing when necessary.

• Travel to project sites and work in varying terrain and weather conditions.

Qualifications

• Approximately 8–10 years of construction-related experience, preferably in construction materials testing, special inspections, geotechnical testing, or a related field.

• Experience supervising or leading field technicians or inspectors.

• Experience with testing of concrete, soils, aggregates, asphalt, or similar construction materials.

• Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical documentation.

• Experience communicating with clients, contractors, and project teams.

• Excellent communication, problem-solving, conflict-resolution, and technical writing skills.

• Experience with project management, staffing, budgeting, estimating, or proposal development preferred.

• Associate degree or higher in construction, engineering technology, or a related field preferred.

Preferred Certifications

Relevant certifications may include:

• ACI Grade I

• ACI Aggregate or Laboratory certifications

• ATTI Asphalt, Soils, or Aggregate

• ICC certifications

• NICET Level I or II

• OSHA 30

• Nuclear Gauge

• ADOT or other applicable DOT certifications
