Job Preview

Hopedale Medical Complex is seeking a professional, compassionate, and dependable Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) to join our Tremont Physician's Office team.

The CMA provides direct clinical support and patient care under the supervision and direction of a physician, nurse, and/or Practice Manager. This position plays an important role in providing professional and courteous patient care while supporting the daily operations of the physician's office.

The position is primarily based at the Tremont Physician's Office. Flexibility to work at other HMC medical and satellite offices is required based on staffing and operational needs.

Certification through a nationally recognized certifying agency is required.

Schedule

  • Monday–Friday: 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
  • Approximately every fifth or sixth Saturday morning
  • Flexibility to work at other HMC medical and satellite offices is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical and Patient Care

  • Prepare visit sheets, forms, and other necessary paperwork for patient appointments, ensuring required materials and documentation are available prior to the patient's visit.
  • Greet patients and escort them to the appropriate examination room.
  • Obtain and accurately document vital signs, patient history, current medications, and chief complaint.
  • Assist physicians and nursing staff with examinations, procedures, and other patient care activities.
  • Complete patient documentation accurately, professionally, and in a timely manner.
  • Complete diagnostic imaging and laboratory requisitions accurately, including the appropriate diagnosis for each test ordered.
  • Provide and document patient education, including medication instructions and other physician-directed information.
  • Notify patients of test results and physician comments or instructions after results have been reviewed and approved by the physician.
  • Schedule referral appointments and other follow-up services as ordered by the physician.
  • Assist consulting specialty physicians and their staff, including Cardiology, Urology, Orthopedics, Spine, and other visiting specialists.
  • Sort and review incoming laboratory and outpatient test results and route them to the appropriate physician for review.
  • Check and maintain adequate supplies in physician and nursing examination rooms.

Administrative and Office Support

  • Answer incoming telephone calls and assist patients with questions or requests within the scope of the position.
  • File laboratory, radiology, dictation, and other reports in patient charts or prepare documents for scanning into the electronic medical record.
  • Cross-train and provide receptionist coverage for the Medical Arts and satellite offices as needed.
  • Support the overall operations of the physician's office and other HMC medical and satellite offices as assigned.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
  • Follow infection prevention and control practices and HMC policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, flexibility, and sound judgment in a busy clinical environment.
  • Participate in required training, continuing education, and competency activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Certification through a nationally recognized medical assistant certifying agency is required.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification required or ability to obtain certification upon hire.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with physicians, nurses, other healthcare professionals, patients, and families.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and composure in a busy clinical environment.
  • Ability to accurately document patient information and follow established clinical and administrative procedures.
  • Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a healthcare team.
  • Flexibility to work at the Tremont Physician's Office and other HMC medical and satellite offices as needed.
  • Availability to work Saturday mornings on a rotating basis, approximately every fifth or sixth Saturday.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working as a Medical Assistant in a physician office or other healthcare setting.
  • Venipuncture experience preferred.
  • Experience with electronic medical records preferred.
  • Experience working with specialty physicians and/or multiple clinical specialties preferred.
  • Familiarity with laboratory, diagnostic imaging, and referral processes preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Constantly (67–100% of the time): Sitting, talking, hearing, near visual acuity, and use of hands and fingers for patient care, documentation, computer use, and operation of medical equipment.
  • Frequently (34–66% of the time): Standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and repetitive hand and wrist movements associated with patient care, room preparation, documentation, and clinical activities.
  • Occasionally (11–33% of the time): Pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying supplies and equipment; assisting patients with positioning or mobility as needed.
  • Rarely (less than 10% of the time): Climbing ladders or working at heights.

Additional physical requirements include:

  • Ability to move throughout the clinic and other HMC medical or satellite offices as required.
  • Ability to assist with patient positioning and mobility as appropriate to the patient's needs.
  • Ability to perform detailed work requiring close visual attention, including reading medical records, prescriptions, requisitions, labels, and computer screens.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to safely perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in the Tremont Physician's Office in a clinical patient-care environment. The employee will have frequent direct contact with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

The position may involve exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, medical equipment, cleaning products, and other healthcare-related hazards. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided and must be used in accordance with established policies and procedures.

The employee may be required to work at other HMC medical and satellite offices based on staffing and operational needs.

Background Check and Drug Screen

All HMC employees are required to successfully complete applicable federal and state background checks and a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

HMC's drug screening process includes testing for substances prohibited under HMC policy, including cannabis (THC), consistent with applicable law and organizational requirements.
