Clinical Nurse Educator/Coordinator – Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)/Orthopedics

JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Nurse Educator/Coordinator is responsible for promoting quality, evidence-based clinical practice and the professional development of clinical staff within an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) specializing in orthopedic care. This position develops, coordinates, and implements educational initiatives while serving as a mentor and resource to clinical staff. The Clinical Nurse Educator/Coordinator identifies professional development opportunities and educational needs and ensures staff are appropriately trained and competent in their roles, with an emphasis on ambulatory surgical services and orthopedic clinical practices.

This is a full-time position, with some days eligible for remote work as approved by the Administrator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Oversees training for clinical staff within the ASC, including onboarding, annual education for staff and physicians, required trainings, and competency assessments, with a focus on orthopedic surgical care and ambulatory clinical practices.
• Sets up employee numbers, manages employee files, and maintains badges for guests and new staff.
• Places scheduled medication orders and maintains an appropriate backup process for medication ordering, including ensuring DEA credentials remain current.
• Manages certification and professional licensing renewals for clinical staff.
• Prepares staff for and communicates changes related to Medicare, CMS, accreditation requirements, and ASC standards, providing education to promote compliance.
• Abstracts data and fulfills all MARCQI responsibilities to support quality outcomes, patient safety, and maximize reimbursement opportunities within the ASC and orthopedic service line.
• Facilitates and monitors HealthStream or other online learning modules and ensures timely completion.
• Collaborates with team leaders and orthopedic clinical leadership to develop department-specific competencies related to pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care.
• Assists with the development and maintenance of educational and required training policies and procedures for the ASC.
• Ensures completion of required training and education related to CMS, AAAHC, and the State of Michigan, including 6-Step Quality Improvement (QI) studies.
• Participates in survey readiness activities for regulatory and accrediting bodies, with a focus on ASC and orthopedic clinical standards.
• Assists with the preparation of agendas and meeting minutes for Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) meetings.
• Maintains and assists with updating policies and procedures for the surgery center, including policies related to orthopedic surgical services.
• Coordinates competency training and schedules mandatory testing, training, and in-services for ASC clinical staff.
• Provides ongoing support related to Risk Management, Safety, and Clinical Records as needed.
• Maintains and manages required logs and documentation for surveyors.
• Coordinates with local leadership regarding emergency preparedness and the ASC's ability and responsibility to provide support during emergencies.
• Creates and maintains records of clinical training and education.
• Develops and coordinates training events throughout the calendar year for employees, medical staff, and mid-level providers, including education specific to ambulatory surgery and orthopedic care.
• Oversees the planning and implementation of educational opportunities, including Blitz Days, clinical safety drills, morning education sessions, and competency-specific training related to ASC and orthopedic clinical practices.
• Coordinates required clinical certifications, including BLS, ACLS, and PALS.
• Researches continuing education (CEU) opportunities and communicates available programs to staff, including orthopedic and ambulatory surgery-specific education.
• Assists with student and resident observation and participation programs within the ASC and orthopedic surgical environment.
• Collaborates with the Infection Control Nurse to coordinate education and training related to infection control practices, including infection prevention within an ambulatory orthopedic surgical setting.
• Assists with safety training implemented by the Safety Committee and Human Resources.
• Attends meetings and participates in programs as assigned by supervisors, including QAPI and MASA programs, with a focus on quality and patient safety within the ASC.
• Promotes professional growth and provides staff with opportunities to expand their knowledge through current clinical resources, orthopedic education, and professional development.
• Provides quarterly written summaries of clinical education activities to the Board of Managers.
• Maintains current knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory requirements, and future developments within ambulatory surgery, orthopedics, and the broader clinical field.
• Presents and facilitates educational programs for both small and large groups of ASC staff, medical staff, and orthopedic clinical teams.
• Participates in the development of educational presentations, reports, and training materials related to ambulatory surgery and orthopedic patient care.
• Assesses and evaluates staff understanding of educational content and adapts training methods to meet individual and departmental learning needs within the ASC and orthopedic service line.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Current and unrestricted Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
• BLS certification required; ACLS certification required within one (1) year of employment.
• PALS certification preferred and may be obtained within one (1) year of employment.
• Must obtain one specialty certification within eighteen (18) months of employment, such as CNOR, CAPA, CGRN, CPAN, or an equivalent certification.
• Previous clinical supervision, staff development, education, or teaching experience required.
• Previous experience in an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), perioperative nursing, orthopedic surgery, or orthopedic clinical care preferred.
