About the Department:
Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason, including but not limited to initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis. SHS operates its main clinic on the Mason Fairfax Campus and smaller clinics on the Mason Square (Arlington) and SciTech Campuses (Prince William).
About the Position:
The Clinical Medical Assistant works independently with other healthcare professionals to provide high quality health care in the clinic setting. The Medical Assistant utilizes clinical and laboratory skills in preparing patients for provider visits, administering prescribed treatments and medications, performing diagnostic tests, and carrying out other duties as requested by clinical leadership.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Skills:
Records patient intake including vital signs, allergies and medications;
Performs procedures such as ear lavage, EKGs, and basic first aid;
Assists providers during procedures and chaperones sensitive exams;
Follows OSHA safety practices, including handling of biohazard materials;
Maintains a safe environment for staff and patients by proper sterilization of instruments and cleaning and stocking of supplies; and
Maintains competency and knowledge in all skills by participating in orientation, ongoing training, and annual infection control training and competency review.
Laboratory/Phlebotomy Techniques and Safety Practices:
Safely operates and maintains all laboratory equipment;
Performs CLIA waived testing;
Accurately documents laboratory test results;
Properly stores and handles hazardous materials, cleaning agents and potentially infectious materials; and
Upon completion of lab orientation, maintains competency in all laboratory procedures.
Administers Immunizations:
Safely and accurately administers immunizations;
Participates in annual safe injection practice training and maintains knowledge through ongoing CDC training; and
Follows CDC and WHO guidelines for vaccine recommendations, and informs patients regarding required and administered vaccines.
Departmental/Divisional Duties:
Participates as a member of an SHS committee, attending quarterly meetings, following through on assignments, and contributing to the maintenance of high-quality healthcare;
Supports divisional planning initiatives and other special projects as assigned, acting as a technical resource and SME as required;
Actively participates in University Life divisional meetings, initiatives, and in-person events to stay connected with divisional and institutional priorities, and to foster a cross-unit collaboration;
Participates in professional development workshops and training sessions for staff across the division to promote continuous learning and skill enhancement;
Stays informed about best practices, research, and emerging trends in higher education and student support services to ensure SHS remains innovative and responsive to the evolving needs of the student body; and
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent;
Certification as a Medical Assistant or comparable experience gained through military, EMT training or 2+ years experience working as a medical assistant in an outpatient setting;
Experience gained through training programs equivalent to a Medical Assistant certification or comparable experience gained through military, EMT training, or working in a ambulatory care setting such as primary care or urgent
