Operations & Patient Flow

 

  • Daily Workflow: Directing unit traffic to prevent bottlenecks and long wait times.
  • Bed Management: Coordinating with the ER and ICU to ensure rapid patient placement.
  • Resource Allocation: Assigning staff based on "patient acuity" (the severity of illness).
  • Discharge Planning: Meeting with social workers to ensure safe, timely patient exits- with special focus on Length of Stay and documentation improvement to improve the Case Mix Index

  • Staff Scheduling: Managing 24/7 rotations, including call-outs and holiday coverage.
  • Conflict Resolution: Mediating disputes between medical staff or between staff and families.
  • Skill Development: Identifying training gaps and organizing "in-service" education sessions.
  • Performance Tracking: Setting annual goals and conducting formal reviews for nurses and techs.

Quality, Safety, & Compliance

 

  • Audit Readiness: Ensuring the unit is always prepared for surprise Joint Commission inspections
  • Incident Investigation: Reviewing "near misses" or patient falls to create prevention plans.
  • Infection Control: Monitoring strict adherence to hand-hygiene and sterile procedure protocols.
  • Patient Experience: Reviewing HCAHPS scores and addressing patient complaints directly.

 

 

Financial & Strategic Management

 

  • Budget Variance: Explaining why the department went over or under budget each month.
  • Supply Chain: Approving high-cost medical equipment orders and monitoring waste.
  • Strategic Growth: Helping the Department Chair plan for new service lines or unit expansions.
  • Labor Costs: Monitoring "overtime" usage and balancing the use of expensive travel nurses.

 

 

 

 

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: PA/NP or a Master's degree (preferred) or a Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration or Nursing  (MHA, MBA, or MSN).
  • Experience: Typically 3–5 years of clinical experience, often in a hospital or leadership role.
  • Certifications: Valuable credentials include Certified Clinical Manager (CCM) or Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM)- preferred
  • Technical Proficiency: Expert knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and healthcare management software.
