Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Clinical Laboratory Supervisor Blood Bank to oversee daily laboratory operations with a strong focus on high-complexity Blood Bank/Transfusion Services. This leadership role is responsible for supervising laboratory staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining quality standards, optimizing operational efficiency, and fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
The supervisor will collaborate with laboratory leadership to implement strategic initiatives, maintain accreditation readiness, and ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care through compliant and efficient laboratory operations. The ideal candidate possesses extensive Blood Bank leadership experience, strong regulatory knowledge, and proven success managing high-complexity transfusion services.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day operational leadership for Blood Bank and assigned laboratory services.
- Supervise laboratory personnel by providing direction, coaching, mentoring, scheduling, and performance management.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant Blood Bank testing and transfusion services.
- Monitor laboratory quality indicators and implement continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain compliance with FDA, AABB, CAP, Joint Commission, CLIA, and organizational standards.
- Lead laboratory accreditation readiness and regulatory inspections.
- Develop, revise, and implement Blood Bank policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures.
- Oversee competency assessments, orientation, continuing education, and staff development.
- Coordinate validation studies, equipment implementation, method verification, and quality assurance programs.
- Monitor laboratory budgets, staffing utilization, and operational performance.
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing, laboratory leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes.
- Investigate laboratory incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure appropriate inventory management of blood products while maintaining regulatory documentation.
- Serve as the Blood Bank technical resource for complex transfusion cases and problem resolution.
- Support implementation of laboratory initiatives and standardization efforts.
- Promote a positive work environment emphasizing teamwork, accountability, safety, and excellent customer service.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or equivalent.
Certification
One of the following:
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) ASCP
- Medical Technologist (MT) ASCP
- Equivalent nationally recognized certification.
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of technical laboratory operations experience.
- Previous laboratory supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Strong experience in Blood Bank/Transfusion Services.
- Experience supervising laboratory personnel.
- Experience with regulatory compliance and accreditation inspections.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of Blood Bank leadership experience.
- Experience managing high-complexity transfusion services.
- Experience with:
- Massive Transfusion Protocols (MTP)
- Antibody identification/workups
- Reference laboratory coordination
- Blood product inventory management
- Experience writing laboratory policies and procedures.
- Experience conducting validation and verification studies.
- Experience with CAP, FDA, AABB, and Joint Commission inspections.
- Strong knowledge of Blood Bank quality systems.
- Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Blood Bank instrumentation, and middleware.
