Clinical Laboratory Supervisor – Blood Bank

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Laboratory Supervisor – Blood Bank to oversee daily operations within a high-complexity transfusion services laboratory. This leadership role is responsible for supervising laboratory staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining quality standards, and driving operational excellence. The ideal candidate will possess strong Blood Bank expertise, proven leadership experience, and a commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and team development.

Assignment Details

  • Employment Type: Direct Hire

  • Schedule: Full-Time, Exempt

  • Shift: Monday – Friday, 1:00 PM – 10:30 PM

  • Weekends/Holidays: None

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Blood Bank and assigned laboratory services.

  • Supervise laboratory workflows, testing quality, and operational efficiency.

  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of laboratory testing and result reporting.

  • Monitor staffing, scheduling, and resource utilization to support departmental goals.

  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor for laboratory personnel.

Leadership & Staff Development

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management for laboratory staff.

  • Coordinate onboarding, orientation, competency assessments, and continuing education.

  • Foster a collaborative, positive, and accountable work environment.

  • Participate in recruitment, performance evaluations, and employee development initiatives.

Quality & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with laboratory regulations, accreditation standards, and quality management systems.

  • Monitor quality indicators and implement corrective and preventive actions when necessary.

  • Support laboratory inspections, audits, and accreditation activities.

  • Maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Financial & Operational Management

  • Monitor departmental budgets and resource utilization.

  • Identify operational improvement opportunities to enhance efficiency and reduce waste.

  • Participate in strategic initiatives, workflow optimization, and performance improvement projects.

Collaboration

  • Partner with laboratory leadership and interdisciplinary teams to support enterprise-wide initiatives.

  • Promote standardization, process improvements, and consistent laboratory practices across departments.

  • Communicate operational updates and resolve issues that may impact patient care or laboratory services.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related laboratory science field.

Certification

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) – ASCP or

  • Medical Technologist (MT) – ASCP (or equivalent nationally recognized certification).

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of technical laboratory experience with progressive leadership responsibilities.

  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience in a clinical laboratory.

  • Strong Blood Bank/Transfusion Services experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of Blood Bank experience, including supervisory or management responsibilities.

  • Experience leading high-complexity transfusion service operations.

  • Strong knowledge of blood product management and transfusion medicine.

  • Experience developing laboratory policies, validation studies, competency programs, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Blood Bank instrumentation, and middleware solutions.

  • Experience collaborating across multiple laboratory disciplines and healthcare teams.

  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills.

  • Excellent project management, organizational, and decision-making abilities.

  • Thorough understanding of laboratory quality management systems.

  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory regulatory and accreditation requirements.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, and move throughout the workday.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when necessary.

  • Ability to safely work with biological specimens, blood products, laboratory chemicals, and specialized laboratory equipment.

  • Compliance with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and laboratory safety protocols.
