    Medical Assisting Clinical Coordinator will facilitate the learning of clinical and administrative competencies in curriculum courses. Instructor(s) will assist the Chairperson in developing and delivering instructional plans to meet course competencies. Instructor will take on responsibility as Clinical Coordinator, establishing a strong relationship with clinical sites and obtaining new clinical sites. Routinely reporting to the clinical site and evaluating students.

    Demonstration of skills in the areas of: communication, organization, and managing multiple priorities; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, community groups, clinical sites, and others; and demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative team environment. Ability to accommodate a flexible working schedule including evenings and weekends. Limited travel within service area.

    Practicum Coordinator

    A. Responsibilities

    The practicum coordinator must adhere to Medical Assisting Essentials/Standards initially adopted in 1969; revised in 1971, 1977, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2003, 2015, 2022.

    1) Select and approve appropriate practicum sites;

    2) Coordinate practicum education;

    3) Ensure documentation of the evaluation and progression of practicum performance;

    4) Ensure orientation to the program's requirements of the personnel who supervise or instruct students at practicum sites;

    5) Coordinate the assignment of students to practicum sites. The responsibility of the practicum coordinator may be fulfilled by the program director, faculty member(s), or other qualified designee provided qualifications of all designated roles are met.

    B. Qualifications

    The practicum coordinator must

    • Possess knowledge of the MAERB Core Curriculum;
    • Possess knowledge about the program's evaluation of student learning and performance;
    • Ensure appropriate and sufficient evaluation of student achievement in the practicum experience.

    C. Curriculum

    The curriculum content must ensure that the program goals are achieved. Instruction must be based on clearly written course syllabi that include course description, course objectives, methods of evaluation, course activities sequence and timeline, and competencies required for graduation. Instruction must be delivered in an appropriate sequence of classroom, laboratory, and clinical activities. Learning objectives include The MAERB Core Curriculum cognitive objectives and psychomotor and affective competencies. The program must demonstrate that the curriculum offered meets or exceeds the MAERB Core Curriculum listed in Appendix B of these Standards. A supervised practicum of at least 160 contact hours in a healthcare setting, demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and behaviors of the MAERB Core Curriculum in performing clinical and administrative duties, must be completed prior to graduation. On-site supervision of the student must be provided by an individual who has knowledge of the medical assisting profession. The program should ensure that the supervised practicum and instruction of students are meaningful and parallel in content and concept with the material presented in lecture and laboratory sessions. Sites should afford each student a variety of experiences. The program should ensure that students achieve The MAERB Core Curriculum psychomotor and affective competencies before performing them during the supervised practicum. CAAHEP supports and encourages innovation in the development and delivery of the curriculum.

    D. Resource Assessment

    The program must, at least annually, assess the appropriateness and effectiveness of the resources described in these Standards. The results of the resource assessment must be the basis for ongoing planning and change. An action plan must be developed when needed improvements are identified in the program resources. Implementation of the action plan must be documented, and results measured by ongoing resource assessment.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Teach courses assigned by the chairperson and approved by the division dean.

    Design and implement instructional activities that are appropriate and meaningful.

    Adhere to the departmental course guidelines and ensure that content covers approved student learning outcomes and CAAHEP/MAERB competencies.

    Maintain all required college records including attendance and grade reports, assignments etc.

    Evaluate student performance using methods appropriate to the course.

    Implement required student learning outcomes assessment.

    Curriculum Development:

    Assist with maintaining, reviewing, and updating course descriptions, learning outcomes, and course syllabi

    Annually review programs of study for accuracy with current curriculum standards and combined course library

    Recommend supplies, equipment, equipment repairs, textbooks, and the scheduling of classroom and laboratory facilities.

    Participate in departmental activities relative to revising and updating the program(s) in the area of expertise.

    Utilize student learning outcomes assessment results to improve courses/program

    Provide assistance to advisees including monitoring academic progress and performance.

    Participate in department, division, and college-wide advising activities.

    Professional Development:

    Develop a professional development plan that is approved by the chairperson and the division dean and participate in those activities.

    Maintain current licensure, certification, or other professional credentials required for position.

    Keep abreast of current technology.

    Attend workshops, conferences, and professional meetings.

    Participate in on-campus professional development activities, including evenings as needed.

    Adhere to all institutional policies and procedures.

    Attend all required department, division, and college-wide meetings.

    Serve on committees as required.

    Participate in college-wide activities.

    Perform other duties as assigned by chair and/or faculty.

    CLINICAL COORDINATOR - SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

    Assure that students receive a comprehensive clinical education through section assignments, evaluations, performance testing, and ongoing communication with certified medical assistants and/or registered nurses, supervisors and staff.

    Conduct formal and informal counseling of students and ensure that students adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of both the school and the hospital.

    Devote sufficient time to clerical responsibilities on an ongoing basis to meet the needs of the program with regard to tracking of student clinical progress and maintaining appropriate documentation in student files.

    Maintain and regularly update student clinical files including rotation evaluations, clinical examination competency evaluations, student bank of leave hours, and clinical attendance records.

    Make regular visits to all clinical areas to evaluate student performance, compliance with program policies and procedures, and to act as a liaison between area supervisors, certified medical assistants, registered nurses, and the program, while soliciting appropriate feedback with regard to program effectiveness.

    Perform competency evaluations as time permits, and oversee evaluation processes, ensuring certified medical assistants are in understanding of the clinical evaluation criteria to ensure the integrity of the evaluation process.

    Motivate students to work at optimal efficiency by fostering an atmosphere conducive to open communication.

    Probationary Period Disclosure

    Satisfactory completion of a one semester probationary period is required for continued employment.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Associate in Applied Science degree in Medical Assisting with current medical assistant certification through a nationally recognized and accredited certifying agency.

    Certification Requirement

    Must be a certified medical assistant -CMA (AAMA) and a member in good standing with the American Association of Medical Assistants. Current CPR BLS certified.

    PREFERRED

    Bachelor's Degree in related field. Minimum 3 years' experience in the clinical setting as a practicing medical assistant. With 2 years teaching as a medical assistant in a community college setting.
